Experts have revealed the ideal age gap in relationships – should you want your love to last.
The impact of age gaps in romantic relationships has long been a topic of discussion and fascination.
Dating someone considerably older or younger than yourself tends to raise eyebrows and invite scrutiny from society.
High-profile cases like Leonardo DiCaprio’s dating history, or Robert De Niro becoming a father at the age of 79, with his 45-year-old girlfriend Tiffany Chen, only serve to fuel the public’s curiosity.
So, how many years between partners is too many? Thankfully, we now have the answer.

An example often cited on this topic is the marriage of France’s president, Emmanuel Macron, who was elected in 2017 at the age of 39 while his wife, Brigitte Trogneux, was 64.
This significant age difference of 25 years drew widespread attention and commentary.
Macron himself addressed this public fascination, telling Le Parisien: “If I was 20 years older than my wife, nobody would think for a single second that we couldn’t be legitimately together.
“It’s because she is 20 years older than me that a lot of people say, ‘this relationship can’t be tenable, it can’t be possible.’”

While exceptions exist in every scenario, research suggests that certain age gaps in relationships are more prone to difficulties and eventual separation.
A study conducted by Emory University in Atlanta sheds light on the matter.
By analysing a sample of 3,000 individuals, the researchers discovered a correlation between age gaps and the likelihood of a breakup.
The study found that couples with a five-year age difference have an 18 per cent higher chance of splitting up, compared to couples of the same age.
This percentage increases significantly to 39 per cent for couples with a 10-year age gap – and a staggering 95 per cent for those with a 20-year age difference.
These findings challenge the common belief that ‘love conquers all’ and that age is merely a number.
Interestingly, the research also indicates that relationships with just a one-year age gap tend to have a much lower risk of separation, at only three per cent.
While this finding may seem surprising, it suggests that small age differences between partners can contribute to greater compatibility and shared life experiences, reducing the potential for conflict.
The experts caution that these statistics should not be interpreted as direct causation.
It is possible that the characteristics and dynamics of couples with significant age gaps may lead to other issues that increase the likelihood of divorce.

Additional factors such as maturity levels, life goals, and societal expectations may also influence the stability of a relationship.
Ultimately, love and relationships are complex, and individual circumstances vary greatly.
Age gaps alone cannot predict the success or failure of a partnership.
Factors such as communication, trust, and shared values play vital roles in the longevity of a relationship.
While societal perceptions may continue to raise eyebrows at significant age differences, it’s important to recognise that each relationship is unique.
People should be free to pursue love and companionship without judgment, as long as both partners are consenting adults and share a genuine connection that goes beyond mere numbers.
