Wednesday star Jenna Ortega says she wishes her character was dating her best friend in the hit Netflix series.

The Addams Family spinoff follows Wednesday Addams (Ortega) as she enrols at Nevermore Academy and becomes obsessed with solving a dark murder mystery.

While there, the gothic teenager meets the colourful and excitable Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers) and they become best friends despite being complete opposites.

Many viewers have taken to social media to say they want the pair to get together – and think they’ve spotted signs they are more than friends.

Ortega, 20, and Myers, also 20, have now addressed the chemistry between the characters and made it clear they agree.

In an interview with the publication Pride, Ortega said: “In a perfect world, we would have been a thing.”

In response to her co-star’s candid comment, Myers laughed.

She then referenced a viral Vine, which has become an LGBTQ+ meme, adding: “I always say, ‘And they were roommates!’.”

This isn’t the only time the characters’ relationship has been addressed.

In a chat with Elite Daily, Myers acknowledged that she and Ortega joked about their potential romance when filming Wednesday’s first season.

Referencing the vine again, the actress said: “You know what I always say: ‘And they were roommates’.”

She went on to comment: “Jenna and I would say that all the time to each other.

“And that’s all that needs to be said – I think that gets the message across.”

Myers also said that she is keen for Wednesday and Enid, who both date men in the series, to progress further with their relationship in future episodes.

“I would honestly love to see Enid join Wednesday on her investigations more. Enid needs to gain some confidence,” she said.

“And I feel like going out with Wednesday and figuring out murder mysteries would really help her.

“I would like to see her be some sort of detective.”

Ortega has also opened up about her character individually and acknowledged that she’s popular amongst the LGBTQ+ community.

When chatting with Gayety, she explained why she thinks Wednesday Addams is a gay icon, commenting: “I think because she’s a badass.

“She’s cool, she’s got a nice sense of style, but she’s somebody who embraces her differences and isn’t out to please anybody.

“I feel like that’s a really, really powerful thing to see. I feel like people want to see powerful women with powerful women.”

In fact, Ortega herself doubts that Wednesday will date Xavier (Percy Hynes White) in the second season.

Speaking to MTV News, she said: “Now that Tyler’s off the table, I feel like she’s off of boys for a while.

“I feel like her and Xavier are just getting to a safe place. I think there’s an opportunity there for a really sweet platonic relationship.”

The theory that there’s something more to Wednesday and Enid’s relationship has been spreading on social media too.

One fan tweeted: “‘Wolf out’ clearly means Enid likes girls, an essay:

“The insane conversation she had with her parents.

“Having a reaction to kissing Ajax because her body is rejecting her compulsory heterosexuality.”

“Finally wolfs out when leaving him and going after Wednesday.”

While other viewers have noticed that Enid’s multicoloured sweater features all the colours of the Lesbian Pride flag.

Referencing this, one tweeted: “Shipping Wednesday and Enid, like her sweater is literally the Lesbian Pride flag!”

Another added: “Enid is literally wearing a sweater that features the same colours as the Lesbian Pride flag… and people STILL think she likes men?”

Wednesday is now available to stream on Netflix.
