Jennifer Lawrence has admitted that she barely understood a film she starred in – despite the fact she slept with the director.

The Hunger Games actress, 32, has established a highly successful career in the movie industry, having grossed over $6 billion at the box office.

While Lawrence’s roles in numerous franchises have made her a household name, not every film she’s taken on has been met with critical acclaim.

Lawrence starred in the movie Mother! which received mixed reviews and left viewers and critics feeling perplexed back in 2017.

The thriller horror revolves around Lawrence’s character, an unnamed mother whose home is invaded by strangers.

It faced criticism for being excessively disturbing and for the perceived poor acting performances by Lawrence and her co-star, Javier Bardem.

One of the most common criticisms of the film was its unclear message.

Speculation arose that Lawrence’s character symbolised Mother Earth, while the invaders represented humans exploiting the planet’s resources.

However, the true meaning remains open to interpretation, contributing to the film’s negative reception.

Interestingly, even Lawrence herself has admitted to not fully understanding the movie, despite her involvement with the director, Darren Aronofsky.

During an episode of Watch What Happens Live, host Andy Cohen asked Lawrence to rate her comprehension of Mother! on a scale of one to totally confused.

Amidst laughter, the American Hustle star candidly replied: “I’m going to be honest.

“Well, I was sleeping with the director, so I had the CliffNotes. So, five. Or four?”

Cohen expressed surprise at her response, remarking that a rating of four was not particularly high.

Aronofsky and Lawrence had developed a connection during the filming process but ended their relationship two months after the movie’s release.

Lawrence later acknowledged that the film’s negative reception had strained their romance.

In a conversation with Adam Sandler, Lawrence reflected: “Normally, I promote a movie, ask people to go see it, and then it’s just out of your hands.

“I normally just kind of let it go. Dating the director was different. We’d be on the [press] tour together, I’d come back to the hotel, and the last thing I want to talk about or think about is a movie.

“He comes back from the tour, and that’s all he wants to talk about and I get it.

“It’s his baby. He wrote it. He conceived it. He directed it.

“I was doing double duty trying to be a supportive partner, while also being like, ‘Can I please, for the love of God, not think about Mother! for one second?’.

“I finally was just like, ‘It’s not healthy. Neither of us are doing it because if I read it, I start getting defensive’. Especially because it’s my man.

“It’s awesome, what we did – some people hate it and the people who hate it, really hate it.

“But it’s nothing that needs to be defended and if I read a negative review, I just feel defensive.”
