A doctor has issued an urgent warning about the potential health risks linked to kissing men with beards.

While facial hair has become more popular than ever in recent years, one medical professional says many people are unaware of the possible consequences that can come from getting up close with unshaven partners.

Beard culture has grown significantly, with more men choosing fuller and longer styles.

Yet according to Dr. Myro Figura, an anesthesiologist from Los Angeles, this rise in facial hair comes with hygiene concerns that people should take seriously.

Beard health warning goes viral: ‘Baby-faced boys till I die’

Posting to Instagram, Dr. Figura explained why kissing someone with a beard could be a bad idea.

His video quickly gained attention online as social media users reacted with surprise and concern.

One person commented: “That’s why I like clean shaven.”

Another wrote: “They will never make me like men with beards!”

A third added: “Baby-faced boys till i die.”

Health risks explained

In his post, Dr. Figura explained: “Kissing somebody with a beard can cause an infection? It sure can.

“If not clean, the beard can harbour a lot of bacteria like staph and strep and when kissing the beard can cause breaks in the skin, allowing bacteria to enter and cause an infection called impetigo.”

What is impetigo?

Impetigo is a contagious bacterial infection that can spread easily through close contact.

It typically begins with red sores or blisters that may burst and leak.

On brown and Black skin, the early redness can be harder to spot, which may delay recognition.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC): “It usually takes 10 days for sores to appear after someone is exposed to bacteria.

“Symptoms include red, itchy sores that break open and leak a clear fluid or pus for a few days.

“The sores can occur anywhere on the body but most often affect exposed skin.”

Prevention and treatment

Because beards can trap dirt, sweat and bacteria, it is important to maintain good facial hair hygiene.

To reduce the risk of impetigo spreading through beard contact, men are advised to wash their facial hair regularly using soap and clean, running water.

Proper grooming helps limit the build-up of harmful bacteria that could potentially be transferred during kissing.

Treatment for impetigo is available and usually straightforward.

Healthcare providers commonly use antibiotics to manage the infection.

These can include topical antibiotics, which are applied directly to the affected areas, or oral antibiotics taken by mouth.

A healthcare professional may recommend a topical ointment when only a few sores are present, while oral antibiotics are generally advised if there are more widespread sores or if the infection is more severe.

Dr. Figura’s message highlights that while beards remain a popular style choice, keeping them clean is essential for preventing avoidable skin infections and protecting both the beard wearer and anyone they get close to.
