People Are Coming Out As Male Lesbians – Here’s What It Means
In today’s day and age, we have a much greater understanding of who we are, how we identify and ways of expressing ourselves.
While there is still a long way to go in terms of acceptance, people are generally much more free to express themselves without fitting into binary labels like male or female, or gay or straight.
In fact, there is a new wave of people who are now identifying themselves as a lesser known, relatively recently labeled s*xuality.
Male lesbians.
Many more sexual identities
In the not to distant past, people tended to identify as being straight, or heterosexual, meaning you’re attracted to the opposite s*x, or as gay, which refers to being attracted to the same s*x.
Many people also identified as being bis*xual, which means being attracted to more than one gender.
Nowadays, however, as we’ve gained a greater understanding of s*xuality and also gender expression, there are many more ways a person can identify.
A person who regards themself as pans*xual is attracted to people regardless of their gender.
Meanwhile, there are a growing number of people who identify as A-s*xual, or ace, meaning they experience little to no sexual attraction to others at all.
This doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t want relationships, to have s*x or fall in love, and this depends entirely on the individual.
Demis*xual, which can overlap with several other labels, refers to when a person can only experience s*xual attraction after forming a strong emotional bond with someone.
This is by no means an exhaustive list and people may use many, many other terms to describe their own identity and feelings, which is their right to do.
Meanwhile, lots of people within the LGBTQ+ community might choose to use the broader term of referring to themselves as queer, as it doesn’t require a specific label and allows for more fluidity across gender and s*xual orientation.

What are male lesbians?
Now, according to social media, there are a growing number of people who are choosing to identify as male lesbians.
What does that mean exactly? Well, there is no precise definition, and there are even some people within the LGBTQ+ community who are not in favor of the term, given that a lesbian has always been females who are attracted to other females.
According to s*xologist and educator Kiki Maree, the meaning of a male lesbian remains up for debate.
“There isn’t a single definition or community consensus, which is one of the reasons the term generates so much discussion,” she told BoredPanda.
“Today, many LGBTQ+ people would say that ‘male lesbian’ is not a standard or widely accepted identity, as lesbian is commonly understood to refer to someone who is not a man and who is primarily or exclusively attracted to women or other non-men.”
But for some people who don’t necessarily fit into binary gender identities, it can be a way of expressing s*xuality and gender, combined with lived experiences.
According to an LGBTQ+ and gender studies expert, the term is most commonly used by ‘transgender men, transmasculine people or some non-binary individuals who identify and live as male or masculine but who identify as lesbian.’
They explained that some trans people retain the label ‘usually because of [their] attraction to women and/or because lesbian describes a community, history, or way of relating that might predate [their] transition.’
“Within trans communities, it’s largely understood as a self-descriptive term,” they continued.
“Yet, some lesbians push back on any man, trans or cis, using the label because they see it as blurring a category that takes work to defend.”
People sharing their experience of being male lesbian
A number of people who identify as male lesbian have shared their experience on social media.
“When I tell people that I am a lesbian trans man, one of the most common arguments I get against my identity is that if I was just trans masculine, or just non-binary, that would okay, but being a trans man is too far,” one person explained on TikTok.
They went on to say that although they are a trans man, and that is how they choose to identify, they also don’t fit into the binary gender form, making them non-binary too.
“I view lesbian as part of my gender, lesbian is a part of my gender experience, like lesbian exists in the depths of my soul, it’s way more than just a s*xuality for me.”
In another TikTok, a person is asked if they consider themselves to be a lesbian, to which they respond: “You could say I’m a male lesbian, yes. We are real, we exist, we are valid.”
When the interviewer asks, ‘so you’re not heteros*xual,’ the person replies: “No, it’s a totally different thing, we are spiritually lesbian, I guess you could say we identify not as cisgender.”
