A mom who ‘died’ after giving birth has claimed her soul briefly left her body and floated into heaven – and you won’t believe what she saw when it happened.

For decades, people who’ve been declared clinically dead – or come terrifyingly close – have come back with stories that sound almost copy-and-paste similar.

We’re talking about floating above hospital beds. Watching doctors work on their bodies from the ceiling. Moving through a tunnel toward a bright, almost magnetic light. Feeling this overwhelming sense of peace. Meeting loved ones who had already passed.

Some people swear they caught a glimpse of heaven. Others say they encountered a presence – not always religious, but powerful.

Many describe a kind of ‘life review,’ like watching the highlight reel of their existence in seconds. And almost all of them say one thing: it felt more real than real.

It’s the kind of detail that makes these stories linger – because for the people who experience it, it doesn’t feel like a dream or a hallucination. It feels like stepping into something bigger than this world.

It’s the kind of account that sounds almost impossible – until it happens to someone in an ordinary hospital room, on what was supposed to be one of the happiest days of their life.

Hannah Mercado had given birth to her second son, Wells, when she began feeling
seriously unwell.

How things went from normal to bad

The 32-year-old said: “The birth went pretty uneventful. I felt super calm and kept my cool, it was a really quick labour.

“Everything was very uneventful until about 12 hours after giving birth.”

The stay-at-home mom explained she started having really bad stomach cramps, and blood clots were coming out.

She then suffered from the ‘most intense pain’ she had ever felt, worse than labor
pains, and then a blood clot ‘the size of a pineapple’ came out of her.

Doctors and nurses arranged for an ultrasound, which revealed that part of her placenta was still in her uterus.

This is a serious issue for people who have just gone through labor, because if the placenta is left in the uterus after childbirth, it prevents the uterus from contracting properly.

This leads to severe, life-threatening postpartum haemorrhage, as well as posing a high risk for severe infection if left untreated, as explained by Mayo Clinic.

From bad to worse

After two procedures, Mercado was given the all-clear, but she wasn’t out of the woods yet.

She was holding her newborn baby when she realized something was wrong and
could feel that she was ‘bleeding really heavily.’

“Instinctually I knew something was wrong,” the mom of two said.

Nurses, doctors, and anaesthesiologists rushed to her room to help.

Mercado fell unconscious due to the extreme blood loss she was experiencing.

Reflecting on the events later, Mercado said: “I started getting really thirsty, as thirsty as I’d ever been in my entire life.

“That’s when I started panicking because I’d watched a lot of medical shows and
remembered once a patient who was actively dying was very thirsty.

“Apparently, when your body needs blood, it actively tells you you’re thirsty.”

What Mercado was experiencing is known as hypovolemic shock, where a large loss of blood or fluids prevents your organs from getting the oxygen and nutrients they need to keep functioning, as outlined by the Cleveland Clinic.

This dangerous condition, caused by the loss of 20% or more of your body’s blood supply, can lead to organ failure, brain damage, and ultimately, death.

Medically dead for a minute

At this time, Mercado was flatlining, with no heartbeat or blood pressure.

This meant she was medically dead for around a minute while on the hospital bed. This was when Mercado felt her soul floating above her body and watching the
hospital staff toiling away to keep alive.

She remembers thinking, ‘Oh, I might be dying,’ and claims: “It wasn’t like my body was floating, it was like my mind was floating away.

“I do believe it was my soul leaving my body.”

The brightest light she’d ever seen

Her last thought before seeing ‘the brightest light’ she’d ever seen was that she. wouldn’t see her children and husband again.

Then, she was filled with a powerful sense of ‘overwhelming peace’ and calm.

Explaining the brilliant light she saw, Mercado said: “You could stare into the sun for minutes and it would never be this bright.

“It was all-encompassing. I was like inside the bright, white light.

“That’s when I knew I was dead. I felt so at peace, it was like my soul was at peace.”

Back down to earth

All of a sudden, Mercado felt like she was ‘drop-kicked into being alive’ as she regained consciousness.

She then underwent two blood transfusions, as the mom had lost half of her body’s blood supply.

Medical News Today explains that the average-sized woman has about 9.5 pints of blood, meaning Mercado lost around five pints of blood during her haemorrhage.

Luckily, Mercado made a full recovery from the terrifying event.

A faith-affirming experience

The mom, who has always been a Christian, said her near-death experience has
affirmed her faith in, and the continuation of life after death, as well as quashing any fears of death.

“This gave me even more of a realisation that I do believe in God, and I was going
up to heaven,” Mercado said.

“It made me realise the afterlife is real.

“It was definitely a spiritual experience, if anything it’s made me closer to God, I’m
definitely not afraid of dying anymore.”
