McDonald’s has announced the return of its beloved McRib burger – though it may well be for the final time.

The fast-food chain said the fan-favourite item will make its comeback on October 31 for a limited run.

In a statement, McDonald’s teased that ‘this could be your last chance to taste it’, while confirming that it won’t be sold nationally for a while after the current promotion ends.

It read: “Like any true farewell tour, we’re hoping this isn’t a ‘goodbye’ but a ‘see you later’.

“Because as our McRib stans have experienced time and time again: you never know when – or if – the McRib is coming back.”

The sandwich is made up of a boneless pork patty, shaped like a rack of ribs and covered in barbecue sauce.

Fans in the UK might be disappointed to learn that the McRib is, however, a US-exclusive item.

‘Maccies’ first added the McRib to menus around Kansas City in 1981. It was then pulled from the menu in 1985.

It has become something of a cult favourite among McDonald’s fans in recent years, with it being sold regionally in the States before extending to all US restaurants in 2020.

As part of the McRib’s ‘farewell tour’, McDonald’s is selling ‘nostalgic McRib merch’, going on sale on November 4.

Alexander Chernev, a professor of marketing at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, said seasonal items are an important marketing tool for the food industry.

He explained: “When you have these exclusive products, which exist for a short period of time, it gives people a reason to come to the store.

“For example, Starbucks customers get excited about Pumpkin Spice Lattes and holiday red cups.”

McDonald’s is no stranger to bringing back items that have previously been axed, so it’s unlikely that this is really the last time the McRib will be on the menu.

In the UK, McDonald’s announced last week that it would be adding five new items to its menu from October 19.

For the first time ever, the fast food brand introduced mini potato waffles to the breakfast menu.

As well as the mini potato waffles, customers will also be able to treat themselves to two brand-new burgers.

The fast food chain is bringing back the BBQ Bacon Stack, which was removed from the menu in July last year.

The burger is made up of two juicy British and Irish beef patties, topped with pepper jack cheese and bacon.

It will set fans back £6.89 for a large. Sadly, due to its addition, McDonald’s has had to axe the Big Tasty burger.

The McCrispy burger is also back, becoming a permanent addition to the McDonald’s menu.

Another item to make a comeback is Nacho Cheese wedges, along with a brand new Twirl McFlurry.
