Convicted Double Murderer Betty Broderick’s Cause Of Death Confirmed
The cause of death of Betty Broderick, the woman infamously convicted of a double murder, has been confirmed.
Broderick, one of America’s most infamous convicted killers whose bitter divorce and deadly revenge became the subject of books, TV movies, documentaries, and podcasts, has died at the age of 78 while serving a life sentence in California.
For decades, Broderick remained a deeply polarizing figure in true crime history. To some, she was a cold-blooded murderer who executed her ex-husband and his new wife in their bedroom.
To others, she was a woman driven to the brink after years of emotional manipulation, betrayal, and a brutal divorce battle that played out publicly.
The sensational case captivated the nation throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s and has continued to fascinate audiences ever since, inspiring everything from Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story to multiple Oprah interviews and countless true crime specials.
Now, nearly 35 years after the killings that made headlines around the world, new details have emerged surrounding Broderick’s final days behind bars.
Betty Broderick’s early life
Born Elisabeth Anne Bisceglia in 1947, Broderick grew up in a strict Catholic household in New York alongside five siblings, per Web Archive.
She later described her upbringing as traditional and intensely focused on preparing women for marriage and motherhood.
While attending college, she met Daniel Broderick III at a dance at the University of Notre Dame. Dan, who would later become a wealthy and successful medical malpractice attorney, quickly pursued her aggressively. The pair married in 1969 and eventually had four children together.
Throughout the early years of their relationship, Betty supported Dan as he earned both his medical degree and law degree.
The family later relocated to San Diego, where Dan’s legal career flourished and the couple settled into an affluent lifestyle in La Jolla.
But behind the scenes, tensions inside the marriage were growing.
By the early 1980s, Dan had hired a young former flight attendant named Linda Kolkena as his legal assistant. Betty soon became convinced the two were having an affair, though Dan initially denied the relationship.
Their marriage rapidly unraveled after Dan moved out in 1985 and filed for divorce.
The divorce battle that shocked America
What followed was an extraordinarily hostile divorce that lasted years and became increasingly toxic, per People.
Betty accused Dan of using his wealth, legal connections, and influence within San Diego’s legal community to isolate her financially and emotionally. Court disputes over custody, money, and property reportedly pushed her into a deep depression.
At the same time, her behavior became increasingly erratic.
She allegedly left hundreds of angry voicemail messages for Dan, violated restraining orders, vandalized property, and at one point even drove her car into the front door of his home while their children were inside.
Meanwhile, Dan’s relationship with Linda became public, and the couple married in 1989 despite Betty’s escalating anger.
Linda herself reportedly feared Betty’s behavior had become dangerous enough that she urged Dan to wear a bulletproof vest at their wedding. Though security was reportedly hired for the ceremony, Dan declined.
Just months later, both would be dead.
The murders that made national headlines
In the early morning hours of Nov. 5, 1989, Betty Broderick drove to the San Diego home where Dan and Linda were sleeping, per the Guardian.
Using a key taken from one of her daughters, she entered the home and walked upstairs carrying a Smith & Wesson revolver she had purchased weeks earlier.
She opened fire inside the bedroom, killing both Dan and Linda.
Linda, who was just 28 years old, died instantly after being shot in the head and chest. Dan was also fatally wounded while reportedly attempting to reach the telephone for help.
Broderick later turned herself in to police and never denied carrying out the shootings.
However, she insisted the murders were not premeditated and claimed she had been emotionally destroyed by years of psychological abuse and manipulation.
Her first trial ended in a mistrial after jurors became divided over whether she had intended to kill the couple. But prosecutors successfully secured convictions during a second trial in 1991.
Broderick was ultimately found guilty of two counts of second-degree murder and sentenced to 32 years to life in prison.
Over the years, she repeatedly maintained that she was a victim of coercive control and domestic abuse rather than a calculating killer. During parole hearings, however, prosecutors argued she remained unrepentant and unwilling to fully accept responsibility for the murders.
She was denied parole multiple times and was not scheduled to become eligible again until 2032, when she would have been 84 years old.
Betty Broderick’s cause of death
In the years following her conviction, Broderick remained one of the most recognizable women in true crime history.
Her case inspired multiple books, television adaptations, documentaries, and interviews that reignited public debate over whether she was a victim, villain, or something in between.
But in recent weeks, her health had reportedly deteriorated significantly.
According to family members, Broderick suffered a serious fall inside the California Institution for Women roughly three weeks before her death, fracturing several ribs.
Her son Daniel Broderick later revealed that she had also been battling multiple septic infections, including one that had reportedly returned after earlier treatment years ago.
As her condition worsened, Broderick was transferred from the prison facility to an outside hospital for a higher level of care.
TMZ reported that she was eventually placed on life support and became unable to communicate. Her four children were reportedly by her bedside when she died on May 8, 2026.
Although officials initially described her death as resulting from natural causes, her family later confirmed the exact circumstances surrounding her passing.
Betty Broderick’s cause of death was confirmed as complications from septic infections following a serious fall that left her with broken ribs before she was placed on life support in intensive care.
