Police Issue Update After Woman Was Shot Dead After Attacking Child In Cart With Knife
Police have issued an update after a woman was shot dead after attacking a child with a knife.
The terrifying sequence of events that unfolded outside an Omaha, Nebraska Walmart has left a community shaken, a young family traumatized, and authorities under intense scrutiny as new details continue to emerge.
What began as an ordinary Tuesday morning quickly spiralled into a life-threatening situation when a 31-year-old woman allegedly attempted to kidnap a toddler, ultimately leading to a fatal police shooting.
In the hours and days following the incident, Omaha Police have provided further updates, while the family of the injured child has begun to speak publicly about the ordeal.
A routine morning turns into chaos
According to police, the incident began inside a Walmart store when the suspect, later identified as 31-year-old Noemi Guzman, allegedly took a knife from within the store before approaching a woman and a three-year-old boy she did not know.
Authorities say Guzman confronted the pair, brandishing the weapon and forcing them through the store and out into the parking lot, per First Alert 6.
Deputy Chief Scott Gray later confirmed that the suspect had effectively ‘taken possession of the child,’ describing the situation as an attempted kidnapping.
Witnesses and police reports indicate that the child—later identified as Cyler Hillman—was placed in a shopping cart while Guzman held him at knifepoint. The situation escalated rapidly as bystanders alerted authorities.
When officers arrived, they were met with a volatile and dangerous scene.
Police say Guzman ignored repeated commands to drop the knife. Instead, she allegedly threatened the child and, in a critical moment captured on bodycam footage, began to swing the weapon toward him.
Deputy Chief Gray said officers had little time to react, noting that the suspect ‘continued to make threats with the knife’ even as police attempted to de-escalate the situation.
Split-second decision ends in fatal shooting
The situation reached its breaking point when Guzman allegedly slashed the child across the face. Officers then opened fire, fatally shooting her at the scene.
Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer later defended the officers’ actions, stating, per the New York Post: “The responding officers acted with professionalism and direct action to intervene and save a child’s life.”
Emergency responders attempted life-saving measures on Guzman, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The child, meanwhile, was rushed to the hospital with a severe facial laceration and injuries to his hand. Despite the seriousness of the attack, doctors confirmed he was expected to survive.
Officials have since emphasised that the incident appears to have been isolated, with no ongoing threat to the public.
“It is unclear what provoked the suspect,” Deputy Chief Gray said, adding that investigators are still working to piece together a motive.

Parents speak out
In the aftermath, Cyler Hillman’s parents, Sara and Casey Hillman, have spoken publicly about the terrifying experience and the emotional toll it has taken on their family, per Sky News.
Meeting reporters at a church the day after the incident, they described a whirlwind of fear, uncertainty, and relief.
Casey Hillman did not hesitate to credit the police with saving his son’s life.
“If they wouldn’t have reacted when they did, we wouldn’t still have him,” he said. “And if she had been any lower with the knife, we wouldn’t have him either.”
His words underscore the narrow margin between life and death in those critical moments.
Sara Hillman described the agonising journey she made after learning her son had been injured, recalling the emotional strain of travelling to the hospital not knowing the full extent of his condition.
Meanwhile, Casey recounted the surreal experience of seeing his son remain remarkably calm despite his injuries.
“One cop told me… ‘If I had a gash that big on my face, I’d be bawling,’” he said.
“That kid hasn’t shed a tear… he was just asking for dad, a Band-Aid and to go home.”
The child only became upset, his father said, when he had to be separated for surgery.
Lingering questions
Although Cyler has since been discharged from hospital, the emotional impact of the attack is already becoming apparent.
His father shared a heartbreaking moment from the morning after the incident: “His big thing this morning was, ‘I don’t want to go outside — it’s scary.’”
For a child described as energetic and adventurous, the change was immediate and deeply affecting.
“I had to take a minute and go sit in the corner and pretty much bawl my eyes out,” Casey said. “That broke my heart.”
Despite his resilience, his parents acknowledge that the long-term psychological effects remain uncertain.
“As things are calming down… there’s gonna be things that come to light,” Casey added. “Whether it’s now or down the road.”
The family has received widespread support from the community, including donations to help cover medical costs and potential therapy.
Police issue major update
As part of their ongoing investigation, Omaha Police have released additional details, including bodycam footage that shows the moments leading up to the shooting.
Officials say the footage confirms that officers issued multiple commands before using deadly force.
Chief Schmaderer reiterated that the decision was made in response to an immediate threat to the child’s life.
City leaders have also backed the officers’ actions, with the mayor stating that their quick response likely prevented a far worse outcome.
Authorities have confirmed that Guzman had a history of mental health issues and prior violent incidents, though her exact motive in this case remains unclear.
Police continue to examine her background, including previous encounters with law enforcement and mental health services.
While the Hillman family has praised police, the incident has sparked wider debate—particularly online—about whether officers could have used non-lethal force.
Some commentators questioned why a Taser was not deployed.
Casey Hillman firmly rejected that criticism.
“Everybody was saying, ‘Well, you should have tasered her first.’ Then I wouldn’t have my kid,” he said. “It’s sad to lose somebody, but it’s real sad to hurt a child.”
The parents have instead raised concerns about security at the Walmart store, questioning how the situation escalated so far without earlier intervention.
“Someone was able to not only steal a knife but also hold two people at knifepoint… from the back of the store to the front,” Casey said.
Sara Hillman echoed those concerns, suggesting that quicker action might have prevented the incident from reaching such a dangerous stage.
A Walmart spokesperson responded by condemning the violence and confirming the company is cooperating fully with the investigation.
The community response
As Omaha processes the shock of what happened, attention is turning toward recovery—both for the Hillman family and the wider community.
The incident has also reignited conversations around mental health support and early intervention.
Sara Hillman urged people to be more proactive when they see someone in crisis.
“People need to be more willing to help people in a mental health crisis,” she said.
For now, the focus remains on Cyler’s recovery.
Described by his parents as a “little cowboy” who loves boots, music, and adventure, he is slowly returning to normal life—watching cartoons, playing, and spending time with his family.
But the memory of what happened will not fade quickly.
The scar on his face is a visible reminder of the violence he endured. The emotional scars may take longer to understand.
As investigations continue and more details emerge, one fact remains clear: a situation that could have ended in tragedy instead became a story of survival—thanks, in part, to a series of split-second decisions that continue to be examined, debated, and defended.
And for one family, those decisions mean everything.
“We about ended up in a different conversation,” Casey Hillman said quietly.
“In a matter of centimetres or inches.”
