Scientists have declared that the Doomsday Clock is now the closest it’s ever been to midnight – aka the end of time – as tensions across the world reach new heights.

There has long been predictions about the end of the world, and it seems so far, no one has quite been on the money.

While we have endured two world wars, global pandemics, and countless natural disasters, we continue to endure and adapt against all odds.

But as global tensions simmer – both between nations and within them – scientists warn that the Doomsday Clock is now closer than ever to striking midnight.

What is the Doomsday Clock?

The Doomsday Clock was established in 1947 by Albert Einstein and is a symbol representing just how close humanity is to a global catastrophe.

The clock is set by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, an organization which is made up of world leaders and Nobel Prize winners.

The group state: “It is a design that warns the public about how close we are to destroying our world with dangerous technologies of our own making.”

The symbolic clock was first introduced after the US dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan, when it was initially set to seven minutes before ‘midnight.’

Now, scientists have warned it’s closer than ever before.

The clock reached its furthest distance from midnight, 17 minutes, in 1991, when President George H.W. Bush and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, reduced nuclear stockpiles.

How close has it been in recent years?

The clock has moved numerous times in recent years – and it’s not hard to see why.

Between the global Covid-19 pandemic, the ever-growing capabilities of AI, and ongoing humanitarian emergencies, it ironically doesn’t take a scientist to work out why the clock may have edged closer to midnight in the last few years.

In 2024 and 2023, the Doomsday Clock was set to 90 seconds before midnight.

But in 2025, the clock moved even further, and was positioned at 89 seconds before midnight.

Catastrophic events in 2025

There were many catastrophic events in 2025, including natural disasters, but also crises fueled by human activity and conflict

Some include the LA wildfires, the war in Ukraine, severe tropical storms and flooding across Asia, the civil unrest across the US, and more.

On each occasion that scientists move the clock, the announcement highlights the complex web of catastrophic risks facing humanity, including weapons of mass destruction, environmental breakdown, and disruptive technologies.

Scientists issue a chilling warning

Responding to the clock moving the closest it ever has, the Bulletin’s president and CEO, Alexandra Bell, issued a statement.

Speaking to Reuters, she said: “Of course, the Doomsday Clock is about global risks, and what we have seen is a global failure in leadership.

“No matter the government, a shift towards neo-imperialism and an Orwellian approach to governance will only serve to push the clock toward midnight.”

She added: “The threat of explosive nuclear testing has returned…and there were three military operations taking place under the shadow of nuclear weapons and the associated escalatory threat.

“The risk of nuclear use is unsustainably and unacceptably high…nothing in 2025 trended in the right direction.”

Where is the clock now?

In a shocking announcement, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists announced on Tuesday (January 27), that the Doomsday Clock is now 85 seconds to midnight, with midnight representing the apocalypse.

In its statement, the group reiterated the terrifying claim that this is the closest humanity has ever been.

The world leading scientists pointed to the dangers of global war, as well as climate change and artificial intelligence, in explaining their decision.

Growing concern has been articulated using seconds rather than minutes, to communicate just how dangerous the situation could really become.
