Man, 28, Dies Suddenly With 72 Holes In His Lungs
A young man just days away from his birthday died suddenly with ’72 holes in his lung.‘
Dylan Jay Watts, 28, lived in Moruya on Australia’s New South Wales Coast and was a father to an eight-year-old son.
At the time of his boy’s birth, he wrote the touching message: “Words cannot describe how much more purpose I feel with you in my life!”
Watts’ family and friendship group have been left devastated following his tragic death, especially as another two of their friends had passed away in recent years.
Family friend Cheyenne O’Brien said although the 28-year-old had been gravely ill in the weeks and days leading to his passing, his loved ones were shocked by his death.
Watts tragically died from a bacterial infection on March 22.
Doctors had initially told the father and his loved ones that he was unlikely to make it to 30 years old due to the severity of bacteria in his lungs.
Watts’ younger sister, Caitlyn, told Daily Mail Australia that the family was still waiting to learn how the illness could have advanced so quickly.
“I found out in July of last year how severe things had begun to get, that he had holes in his lungs and had been in hospital for three weeks after coughing up blood,” she said.
“His doctor told him if he hadn’t got in so soon, that could have killed him.”
In 2021, a scan identified two holes in Watts’ lung. His health began to deteriorate over the following year.
Watts reportedly experienced reflux and lethargy, had a persistent cough (which wasn’t fixed by over-the-counter medicine), and was coping with mental health issues.
The father began receiving specialized treatment in early 2024 when he was hospitalized for three weeks following a lung hemorrhage.
Yet by mid-2024, the number of holes in his lung had reportedly increased to 72.
Caitlyn said that by this point, her brother was on enough medication and antibiotics that it ‘filled an entire backpack.’
“He was severely unwell yet fighting for his health and optimistic about some kind of recovery,” she said.
Watts’ mother, Suzanne, picked up her son and his puppy, Polar, and began making long-term care arrangements.
Sadly, the 28-year-old died five days later.
A GoFundMe page has been launched to help the family with funeral costs. Its target is AU$6,000, and so far, it’s accumulated just over AU$4,600.
“Let this be a reminder that those you love can be gone in an instant,” Caitlyn wrote on the fundraiser page.
“So, hold them close today and tell them you love them. There is a fragility in all of us.
“His memory and his story will be remembered by many who loved him, and he will be forever missed.”
Family friend O’Brien commented: “Although Dylan had been unwell, this has, of course, come as a shock to his loved ones who are now having to deal with not only their grief, but the stress of having to organize his farewell.
“To help Dylan’s family be able to celebrate his life and have the send-off that he deserves please donate if you can and share.
