Lindsey Vonn Issues Heartbreaking Update After Horrifying Olympics Crash
There has been a devastating update from Lindsey Vonn after her horrifying Olympics crash.
The 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina has been overshadowed by one of the most devastating moments in alpine skiing history, as American legend Lindsey Vonn suffered a catastrophic crash that has left the sporting world in shock.
The Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics was meant to be the stage for one of sport’s greatest comeback stories.
Vonn, the 41-year-old American skiing icon, had come out of retirement with dreams of adding one final medal to her already legendary career.
As the most decorated female alpine skier in history, Vonn’s decision to compete again had captivated audiences worldwide, even as concerns mounted about her physical condition.

The legend returns despite the odds
Vonn’s achievements in alpine skiing are nothing short of extraordinary. Having retired in February 2019 as the sport’s most successful female competitor, her legacy was already cemented in Olympic and World Cup history, per Olympics.com.
She holds a remarkable record of 12 World Cup wins at the Olympia delle Tofana course in Cortina, making her return to this very mountain all the more poignant.
Yet this comeback was fraught with danger from the start.
The American superstar was already competing on a titanium knee replacement, a testament to the brutal toll her career had taken on her body – yet the challenges didn’t stop there.
‘The odds are stacked against me’
In the days leading up to her fateful run, Vonn had been remarkably candid about the immense physical obstacles she faced.
Just nine days before the Olympic downhill event, she ruptured the ACL in her left knee, an injury that typically sidelines professional athletes for months. Despite this devastating setback, Vonn made the controversial decision to compete anyway.
Writing on Instagram before the race, she displayed the defiant spirit that had defined her career: “I will stand in the starting gate tomorrow and know I am strong. Know that I believe in myself. Know that the odds are stacked against me with my age, no ACL, and a titanium knee – but know that I still believe.”
She continued: “And usually, when the odds are stacked against me the most, I pull the best of what’s inside me out. I will race tomorrow in my final Olympic Downhill and while I can’t guarantee a good result, I can guarantee I will give it everything I have… no matter what happens, I have already won.”

When questioned about why she would risk competing with such serious injuries, Vonn’s response was simple and heartfelt: “I just love ski racing.”
She emphasized that her decision wasn’t about seeking attention or proving anything to others. “I know exactly who I am and I know exactly what I am made of,” she declared.
Thirteen seconds that changed everything
On Sunday, February 8, Vonn’s Olympic dream turned into a nightmare in the blink of an eye. Just 13 seconds into her downhill run at Cortina, disaster struck.
The American skier clipped a right-side gate whilst airborne, sending her spinning sideways before she crashed into the ground in what witnesses described as a horrifying accident, per the Mirror.
The crowd at Cortina d’Ampezzo audibly gasped as the severity of the crash became apparent. Onlookers reported hearing Vonn screaming in pain on the mountainside.
She lay motionless in the snow for approximately 15 minutes as emergency services rushed to her aid, while her family watched in horror from the sidelines.
A sister’s fear
Vonn’s sister, Karin Kildow, who was present at the event, later described the terrifying moments following the crash to NBC.
“I mean that definitely was the last thing we wanted to see and it happened quick and when that happens, you’re just immediately hoping she’s okay,” she said, her voice heavy with emotion.
“It was scary because when you start to see the stretchers being put out, it’s not a good sign. We just really hope she’s okay.”
The injured skier was eventually airlifted from the mountain by helicopter, with spectators cheering in support as the aircraft flew overhead.

Vonn breaks her silence
Despite the physical and emotional trauma, Vonn herself released a lengthy statement on social media that showcased her characteristic resilience and philosophical outlook.
She explained the technical details of what went wrong: “I was simply five inches too tight on my line when my right arm hooked inside of the gate, twisting me and resulted in my crash.”
Importantly, she addressed speculation about whether her pre-existing injuries contributed to the accident: “My ACL and past injuries had nothing to do with my crash whatsoever.”
The statement was both heartbreaking and inspiring: “While yesterday did not end the way I had hoped, and despite the intense physical pain it caused, I have no regrets. Standing in the starting gate yesterday was an incredible feeling that I will never forget.”

Celebrities and athletes rushed to show their support.
Hollywood actress Reese Witherspoon wrote: “LV, I’m so inspired by your courage to always challenge yourself. You are & will always be a true Champion,” while Olympic track star Allyson Felix added simply: “Forever an inspiration.”
A devastating update
In the aftermath, Vonn’s father, Alan Kildow, made an emotional plea for his daughter to retire permanently from competitive skiing.
“She’s 41 years old and this is the end of her career,” he told The Associated Press. “There will be no more ski races for Lindsey Vonn, as long as I have anything to say about it.”
Despite his anguish, Kildow praised his daughter’s mental fortitude: “She’s a very strong individual. She knows physical pain and she understands the circumstances that she finds herself in… She’s handling it real well.”
The Ca’ Foncello Hospital in Treviso released an official statement that confirmed the worst fears of Vonn’s supporters worldwide, Sky News reports.
The American skiing legend had undergone emergency orthopedic surgery to stabilize a complex tibia fracture in her left leg.
Vonn herself confirmed that she would require multiple surgeries to properly repair the damage.
Her team has confirmed she is in stable condition, but the road to recovery will be long and uncertain.
