Madeleine McCann Investigators Announce Bombshell Update In Case
Nearly 20 years on from the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, investigators have issued a shocking update in the case.
The three-year-old girl was taken from her bed in a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007.
But the circumstances surrounding her disappearance have always remained a mystery.
Now, as the investigation into the missing girl – known as Operation Grange – reaches it’s 15th year, the specialist Metropolitan Police team have issued a chilling update.
Operation Grange
Operation Grange, which began soon after Madeleine went missing, is now made up of three police officers and one member of staff working on a part-time basis.
It started as an ‘investigative review,’ but it was soon upgraded to a full inquiry in July 2013, allowing authorities to follow new lines of enquiry as and when they arose.
In the early stages, detectives identified 60 people of interest, 38 of whom were formally investigated.

Numerous investigative leads directed detectives to a man named Christian Brückner, who subsequently became the prime suspect in the case.
The 49-year-old is a convicted r**ist but was released from prison in Germany in September 2025, after serving a seven-year sentence for a separate case.
Despite being the prime suspect in the disappearance, he has never been charged with any offences linked to Madeleine.
Who is Christian Brückner?
Brückner lived in the coastal village of Praia da Luz between 1995 and 2007, and lived just a mile away from the resort where the McCanns were staying when their daughter vanished.
Police in the area said the man had previously been known to burgle hotels and villas, while also selling drugs.
Around an hour before Maddie was taken from the apartment, Brückner received a half-hour phone call in Praia da Luz.

While British police continue to treat Madeleine’s case as a missing persons investigation, police in Germany believe it to be a murder investigation.
September 2025 marked the first time that Brückner was among the general public after being named as the prime suspect in the missing toddler’s case.
He had been in jail for r**ing a 72-year-old US woman in Praia da Luz in 2005.
But it wasn’t the first time Brückner had received a criminal conviction.
He had also received two previous convictions for s**ual abuse of a child, in unrelated cases to Madeleine.
New Madeleine McCann drama series
While there have been many documentaries made on the disappearance of the little girl, there has never been a drama made – until very recently.
Just last month (February 2026), Channel 5 confirmed that they have commissioned a series that will focus on her mother, Kate.

Actress Laura Bayston will play Kate, in the 90-minute film called Suspect: Kate McCann.
The McCanns are reportedly ‘aware of the film’ but ‘not involved editorially.’
What is the bombshell update?
Since its launch in 2011, the inquiry has cost the British taxpayer approximately £13.3 million.
Last year, Operation Grange was allocated a budget of £108,000 to work on the case, but this year, the team are receiving a cut.
The specialist Metropolitan team have been allocated £86,000 for 2026/27, after many calls for the case to be closed.
In response to the update, retired Metropolitan Police detective, Peter Bleksley, said: “There will be parents of other missing children reading this and asking why the investigation into their child’s disappearance has not had the same level of funding and attention.

“There’s possible confusion among them as to why there is still a dedicated team of officers looking at this. I can see why they would be angry when their child’s case has not had the same level of resources.”
He added: “You have to ask, what have these millions achieved? The answer, sadly, is nothing.”
However, a source close to the family said that the McCanns are just happy to be receiving funding into the case for another year.
The source said: “The family will be pleased that the funding has been granted for another year. They have always had high hopes Maddie will be found.
“Fifteen years since Grange launched, they still hope and pray for positive news.”
