A 27-year-old quadruple amputee has been arrested on suspicion of murder in Maryland after allegedly shooting a man while driving.

Professional athlete Dayton Webber has been accused of killing Bradrick Wells, also 27, while the victim was sitting in the passenger seat of his vehicle.

The man was driving in La Plata, Maryland on Sunday (March 22), when the two allegedly got into a heated exchange which resulted in Webber reaching for his gun while in control of the car.

The American athlete had two other passengers in the back of his car at the time, according to reports.

Who is Dayton Webber?

The 27-year-old is a quadruple amputee and professional cornhole player.

It’s a popular game in the US, where players toss bean bags into a hole on a board.

Alongside competing in the sport, Webber also brands himself as a motivational speaker on social media.

The man became a quadruple amputee as a toddler, after contracting a serious bacterial infection as a baby at just 10 months old.

He then underwent the four amputations, spending countless months in hospital.

In a 2023 essay published on NBC’s Today website, he said: “They told my parents there was only a 3% chance that I’d survive.

“I went from overcoming a serious blood infection and undergoing a quadruple amputation as a baby to becoming a professional athlete as an adult.”

Webber charged with first-degree murder

Authorities revealed on Monday (March 23) that Webber had been charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and other related charges following the death of Wells.

Police revealed that they were informed of the killing by the other passengers in the car, who had refused to help Webber get rid of the body.

Instead, the passengers jumped out of the car and ran away.

The Sheriff’s Office later reported that Webber had driven away from the scene with the body of Wells still in the car.

Several hours later, a resident 20 miles away in Charlotte Hall, Maryland, called authorities to report a body in the yard.

After identifying the body, Wells was pronounced dead at the scene.

Webber’s car was recovered around 150 miles away from the location he had dumped Well’s body, in Charlottesville, Virginia, and Webber was found in a nearby hospital.

What is the motive?

Authorities confirmed that all passengers in the car were ‘known’ to each other, however they did not share any possible motive for the attack.

But passengers in the back of the car reported that the two in the front had gotten into an ‘argument’ prior to the gunshots being fired.

Police are now awaiting a search warrant in order to examine the car.

Authorities issue a statement

Diane Richardson, of the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, said: “It’s early in the investigation, but there’s no evidence to suggest anyone else was involved in the shooting and that he acted alone.”

Following Webber’s arrest, the American Cornhole League also released a statement on social media.

They wrote: “The ACL is aware of the reports regarding allegations involving Dayton Webber. This is an extremely serious matter and our thoughts are with all those impacted, including the family and loved ones of Bradrick Michael Wells.

“At this time, this remains an active legal situation.

“We respect the judicial process and will not comment on specific allegations or details while proceedings are ongoing.”

They added: “We will provide updates if and when it is appropriate to do so, but in the meantime, the league will have no further comment.”

How did Webber fire the gun?

Many online have questioned not only how Webber was able to drive a vehicle as a quadruple amputee, but also how he was able to accurately fire numerous gunshots at the same time.

It remains unclear how Webber fired a gun while driving the car, but a video on his YouTube channel is now going viral online, showing how he loads and fires a weapon with no hands.
