Robbie Coltrane’s cause of death has been confirmed.

The Harry Potter, James Bond and Cracker star died on October 14, aged 72

Confirming Coltrane’s death, his long-time agent, Belinda Wright, thanked the medical staff at Valley Royal Hospital near Falkirk, Scotland, for their ‘care and diplomacy’.

She said: “He is survived by his sister Annie Rae, his children Spencer and Alice and their mother Rhona Gemmell.

“They would like to thank the medical staff at Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert for their care and diplomacy.”

According to numerous reports, Coltrane died as a result of ‘multiple organ failure’.

Coltrane’s death certificate is said to have noted that the Scot, who famously played Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter franchise, had been suffering from sepsis, lower respiratory tract infection and heart block.

He had also been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, reports Daily Record.

The actor’s passing led to an outpouring of grief with tributes flooding in from across the globe – including one from Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe.

Radcliffe said in a statement: “Robbie was one of the funniest people I’ve met and used to keep us laughing constantly as kids on that set.

“I’ve especially fond memories of him keeping our spirits up on Prisoner of Azkaban, when we were all hiding from the torrential rain for hours in Hagrid’s hut and he was telling stories and cracking jokes to keep morale up.

“I feel incredibly lucky that I got to meet and work with him and very sad that he’s passed.

“He was an incredible actor and a lovely man.”

‘Harry Potter’ author JK Rowling said: “I’ll never know anyone remotely like Robbie again.

“He was an incredible talent, a complete one-off, and I was beyond fortunate to know him, work with him and laugh my head off with him.

“I send my love and deepest condolences to his family, above all his children.”

Coltrane’s most famous role was of course his portrayal of Harry Potter‘s gentle giant, Hagrid.

He first appeared in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in 2001 before reprising his role in the fantasy short film Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure in 2019.

Coltrane was also known for his role as criminal psychologist Dr Eddie ‘Fitz’ Fitzgerald in the ITV crime drama Cracker.

He also starred in two James Bond films as Valentin Zukovsky in GoldenEye and The World Is Not Enough.

Harry Potter fans have been sharing a poignant clip from the film series’ 20th-anniversary television special, Return to Hogwarts, which aired in January this year.

Discussing its legacy, an emotional Coltrane said: “I just think it’s the end of an era – 10 years of my life.

“My children have grown up during it, of course.

“The legacy of the movies is that my children’s generation will show them to their children.”

He added: “So you could be watching it in 50 years’ time, easy… I’ll not be here, sadly, but Hagrid will, yes.”
