If nuclear war breaks out, it’s said that getting in the right position within 10 minutes could dramatically increase your chances of survival.

If the unthinkable happened and nuclear war broke out, the moments immediately after an explosion could determine who survives.

Taking the right action straight away – including getting into the safest possible position – could dramatically improve people’s odds.

With tensions escalating around the world, following the US and Israel’s recent bombing of Iran, the subject of nuclear war is once again making headlines.

War in Iran sparks nuclear fears once again

When Russia began its illegal invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the threat of nuclear war reared its head amid some not-so-veiled threats from Vladimir Putin towards NATO countries.

Tensions arose but then dissipated regarding a nuclear threat, although the Russian dictator’s illegal war still wages on, with thousands continuing to lose their lives.

Four years later and World War Three is making headlines, with Iran suffering severe bombardment from the skies after America and Israel launched a barrage of missiles over the past 11 days.

On the first day of the war in Iran, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in a missile attack on Tehran.

More than 700 Iranians are reported to have been killed in strikes since then, including 165 schoolgirls at a girls’ primary school in Minab.

Seven US servicemen have also lost their lives following retaliatory attacks from Iran on American bases around the Middle East.

Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates have all been targeted by Iranian missile strikes over the past two weeks.

US President Donald Trump, meanwhile, has threatened Iran that he will command the US military to hit them ’20 times harder’ if the Strait of Hormuz is closed off, restricting major oil supplies to the rest of the world.

Iran’s vast oil supplies are of major concern to the US President, who is facing intense criticism for his decision to take the US into another war in the Middle East.

The US’s bombing campaign in Iran has seen gasoline prices increase by $0.48 a gallon over the past week alone – a far cry from the energy cost reductions Trump promised during his presidential election campaign in 2024.

Though Trump has claimed there is ‘nothing left’ of the Iranian military, Iran is still causing incoming missile sirens to be blared in Bahrain and the UAE as recently as March 10, while Saudi Arabia also reported that it had intercepted two Iranian drones within their airspace. Hezbollah, a militia backed by Iran, is also in combat with Israeli forces in southern Lebanon.

It is with this in mind that some experts are warning of Iranian backed attacks on US soil, specifically targeting the nuclear silos America has located around the United States.

Video explains what to do in case of a nuclear attack

As the possibility of doomsday continues to loiter in the air, one creator has taken to TikTok to explain what to do in the immediate aftermath of a nuclear attack.

The post reads: “If the sirens go off, 10 minutes decide if you live or die. If the unthinkable ever happens, it’s not about panic, it’s about the first decisions you make.

“In this post, I break down what actually matters in the first 10 minutes after a nuclear detonation. Where to go, what to avoid and how to dramatically increase your survival odds using real prepper principles.

“This isn’t fear-mongering. It’s practical, calm, life-saving information everyone should know. Stay ready, not scared.”

It should really go without saying, but looking directly at the flash from a nuclear explosion is a big no-no. The flash is brighter than the sun and can result in immediate flash blindness and permanent retinal burns.

Unsurprisingly, being inside, close to a news source, is your best option for survival, avoiding any radioactive fallout, and having information at hand as to what to do next.

The initial 12 to 24 hours are critical in surviving a nuclear attack.

Basements and concrete buildings are often regarded as some of the safest options. Radioactive fallout can arrive 10 to 15 minutes after the original explosion and is most dangerous up to 72 hours after the attack.

All outer clothing should be removed to rid yourself of 90% of radioactive material. Seal the clothing in a bag and clean dirty skin with soap and water. Change into clean clothes from a sealed container.

Hair conditioner in a shower is also a no-go, as there can often be ingredients in conditioners that act as glue, binding radioactive particles to your hair that then become a lot more difficult to wash out.

The video also advises people on the safest position to take in the event of a nuclear war.

It says closing your eyes and taking cover are essential in surviving a nuclear bomb detonation. Keeping your mouth open slightly also helps equalize the pressure on your eardrums, which should reduce the risk of them bursting from the initial intensity of the shockwave.

The ‘perfect prepping’ video does maintain that a nuclear war is highly unlikely, but to be on the safe side, people who feel like it could practice getting into their safe space within five minutes, so they are adequately prepared if the time comes.
