Death Row Inmate Suffered ‘Excruciating’ Execution After Making Last Meal ‘Mistake’

A death row inmate endured what experts described as an ‘excruciating’ execution after a heartbreaking misunderstanding during his final hours.

For centuries, prisoners sentenced to death have often been offered one final meal before their execution. While the tradition is widely associated with compassion today, its origins are thought to be far more unsettling.

According to Reddit, historians believe the custom may have stemmed from an ancient superstition. The belief was that sharing food with someone condemned to die would prevent their spirit from returning to haunt the living.

Over time, however, the practice evolved into what many viewed as one final act of dignity before an inmate’s life came to an end.

Across the United States, most states that still carry out executions allow death row inmates to choose a special final meal, although restrictions usually apply.

Texas famously ended the tradition of offering special last meals in 2011 after one inmate ordered an extravagant feast but refused to eat any of it.

Whether people see the ritual as compassionate or unnecessary, it remains one of the few personal moments afforded to prisoners before execution.

A horrific string of crimes

Wesley Ira Purkey, 68, was sentenced to death in 2004 for the 1998 kidnapping, s**ual assault, and murder of 16-year-old Jennifer Long.

Authorities said Purkey persuaded the teenager into his pickup truck outside a supermarket after she was last seen skipping school on January 22.

He then brutally r***d and murdered Long before dismembering her body, burning the remains, and disposing of them in a septic pond.

Jennifer Long’s remains have never been recovered.

Long’s murder was not his only act of violence.

Just months later, in October 1998, Purkey beat 80-year-old Mary Bales, a polio survivor, to death with a claw hammer after visiting her home to repair a leaking kitchen faucet.

Neighbors became suspicious and alerted authorities, leading to his arrest.

Purkey pleaded guilty to Bales’ murder and received a life sentence. While imprisoned, he later confessed to killing Jennifer Long, resulting in a federal death sentence.

The execution that sparked debate

Purkey was executed in 2020 using the lethal injection drug pentobarbital, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.

Following his death, an autopsy found he suffered from ‘severe bilateral acute pulmonary oedema’ along with ‘frothy pulmonary oedema in the trachea and main stem bronchi.’

The findings indicated that fluid rapidly filled his lungs and airways, producing what experts have likened to the sensation of drowning while still conscious. Medical professionals have described that feeling as one of the “most excruciating feelings known to man,” according to news.com.au.

Dr. Gail Van Norman explained: “It is a virtual medical certainty that most, if not all, prisoners will experience excruciating suffering, including sensations of drowning and suffocation from [the lethal injection drug] pentobarbital.”

Before his execution, Purkey also addressed the families affected by his crimes.

He reportedly said (via Daily Star): “I deeply regret the pain and suffering I caused to Jennifer’s family. I am deeply sorry. I deeply regret the pain I caused to my daughter, who I love so very much.

“This sanitized murder really does not serve no purpose whatsoever.”

Jennifer Long’s relatives witnessed the execution.

Afterward, her father, William, reflected on the moment, saying: “We took care of today, what we needed to take care of. It has been a long time coming.

“He needed to take his last breath — he took my daughter’s last breath. And there’s some resolve. There is no closure, and there never will be because I won’t get my daughter back.”

The final meal mistake

In his final days, it’s believed Purkey suffered from Alzheimer’s disease, as per AP News.

The night before his execution, the inmate reportedly saw Bill Clinton on TV and said that he would vote for him in the upcoming presidential election.

Purkey is believed to have asked for pecan pie for his last meal. He asked to have it ‘later,’ unaware there wouldn’t be a ‘later.’

Due to his Alzheimer’s disease, Purkey didn’t fully comprehend that his execution was imminent and that he would never have another opportunity to eat the pecan pie he had requested.

The request to save his final meal for later revealed a man who had lost touch with the reality of his situation. It was a poignant reminder of how dementia had robbed him of his ability to understand even the most basic aspects of his final hours.

Prison staff reportedly tried to explain to Purkey that he should eat the pie when it was served, but his confused mental state meant he couldn’t grasp the urgency or finality of the moment.
