A death row inmate has gone viral this week after his three chilling final words have been shared.

Many of America’s death row convicts use their final moments to send a message to the world.

This can be through their choice of a final meal, their last actions, or, most prevalently, the last words they choose to utter while they’re alive.

And this week, it’s Robert Charles Towery who used his last words to command attention.

His final utterance was an attempt to share a secret message with his family.

Towery was handed the death sentence after being found guilty of the robbery and murder of 68-year-old Mark Jones in 1991.

The crime was particularly brutal, with Towery injecting his victim with battery acid.

Chillingly, Towery was actually known to his victim, who had previously hired him as a mechanic.

On the day of the crime, Towery and his accomplice, Randy Barker, entered Jones’s home claiming their car had broken down, and they needed to use his phone.

However, once inside the home, the pair robbed Jones at gunpoint, taking money, jewellery, electrical items, and other valuables.

Following the robbery, Towery injected Jones’s arm with battery acid in an attempt to kill him.

When this didn’t work, he strangled Jones to death with plastic ties.

After Jones’s body was discovered, the police traced the crime back to Towery and Barker via a security guard, who had seen them dumping Jones’s car.

Barker testified against Towery for a plea deal and was released from prison in 2001.

Towery, however, was sentenced to death row, and executed by lethal injection in March 2012.

Towery broke down in tears before his execution and even made apologies for his vile crimes, according to the Daily Star.

He said: “I would like to apologise to Mark’s family and friends for what I did to them. I would like to apologise to my family.

“So many times in my life I went left when I should have gone right and I went right when I should have gone left. It was mistake after mistake. I love my family.”

But it was then that Towery made his bizarre final three-word utterance.

He said: “Potato, potato, potato.”

It’s believed this strange sentence was actually in code for his nephew to discover.

Apparently, ‘potato’ is similar to the sound a Harley Davidson makes while it’s idling, and was a way for Towery to let his family know that he would be OK, as per the Arizona Mirror.

The carb was actually featured in Towery’s final meal too.

It was made up of porterhouse steak, sautéed mushrooms, baked potato with butter and sour cream, steamed asparagus, clam chowder, Pepsi, milk and apple pie with vanilla ice cream.
