There has been an unexpected update in the manhunt for a father Travis Decker, who allegedly suffocated his three daughters to death.

Travis Decker is currently wanted on first-degree murder and kidnapping charges by the U.S. Marshals Service.

The man allegedly murdered his three young daughters, by suffocating them with a plastic bag, on May 30.

Their bodies were found located near to Decker’s abandoned car, days after the killing on June 2, near a Washington state campground.

What was supposed to be a three-hour ‘planned visitation’ as part of his joint custody schedule, morphed into a devastating crime scene, as well as a relentess manhunt for the 32-year-old.

But there has been an unexpected twist in the case.

Despite relentless searches for the suspected criminal, over a month after the killings of 5-year-old Olivia, 8-year-old Evelyn, and 9-year-old Paityn, the manhunt continues.

During a news conference, Chelan County Sheriff Mike Morrison, who is part of the investigation, said: “There is nowhere that he’s going to be able to go that we don’t have units waiting for him.

“Eventually he’s going to tire. He’s going to make a mistake.”

A major update in the case came from a family in the Bear Creek area of the Sawtooth National Forest, who reported a sighting of Decker.

Some time later, a media release shared by U.S. Marshals Service Supervisory Deputy Michael Leigh, confirmed that officials had found the man.

He said: “The U.S. Marshals Service Greater Idaho Fugitive Task Force located the man multiple witnesses saw at the Sawtooth National Forest who was believed to be Travis Decker.

“The hiker who is the same height and roughly the same weight as Decker, also has dark features, a beard and tattoos on his arm and calf. Investigators interviewed the cooperative man and confirmed he was hiking in the Bear Creek area this past weekend.”

However, despite the descriptions being an almost perfect match, in a shocking twist, officials have stated that the sighting was a case of ‘mistaken identity.’

Leigh added: “At this time, law enforcement has stopped searching for Decker at the Sawtooth National Forest and has begun to demobilize their resources.”

A U.S. Marshalls spokesperson noted that when the family first tried to communicate with the man, he didn’t want to make eye contact and didn’t respond when spoken to.

However, the manhunt continues, and there is a reward of $20,000 in place for information leading to Decker’s arrest.

There are lots of possibilities with the case, one being that Decker may not even be alive when he is eventually found.

Speaking to People, Sheriff Mike Morrison said: “I would imagine most likely if he were to have died, it would’ve been from falling; an injury maybe got infected to the point where it did cause him, you know, some further issues or he drowned.

“There’s certainly a lot of possibilities and if we do find him deceased, of course we’re going to do a full autopsy on him just to get confirmation on his cause of death.”
