Donald Trump has sparked a fresh wave of criticism after sharing a series of ‘disgusting’ posts hours after the death of President John F. Kennedy’s granddaughter.

The timing of the posts drew swift backlash from political commentators and social media users alike, who called the move ‘rude, evil, and hateful.’

Critics say the President’s choice to amplify hostile commentary while the Kennedys were mourning demonstrated a disregard for basic decency.

Who was Tatiana Schlossberg?

Tatiana Schlossberg, 35, was the daughter of Caroline Kennedy and the late Edwin Schlossberg.

She was a climate and energy journalist, known for her reporting on environmental issues.

Schlossberg had publicly shared her diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia – a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer – in an essay in The New Yorker in November 2025.

She died just over a month later, on December 30.

In the hours after her death was announced, relatives took to social media to honor her life and legacy, sharing messages of love and remembrance.

“Our beautiful Tatiana passed away this morning. She will always be in our hearts,” read the statement shared by the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum on behalf of her family.

Trump’s tensions with the Kennedy family

Several members of the Kennedy family have publicly criticized President Trump in recent years.

These tensions came to a head recently during a bitter dispute over one of America’s most famous institutions: the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

In December, Trump moved to rename the landmark in Washington, DC – originally dedicated to the memory of President John F. Kennedy – to include his own name.

After working behind the scenes to alter board voting procedures and install loyal appointees, the board approved renaming the institution to the ‘Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.’

The move sparked immediate backlash from artists, cultural figures, and members of the Kennedy family, who argued the change was inappropriate and likely illegal without Congressional approval.

Some performers canceled planned shows, and lawsuits were filed challenging the decision.

The feud between Trump and the Kennedys has become emblematic of broader political divisions in the US, with the Kennedys representing a storied Democratic legacy and the Trump administration pushing back against what it frames as entrenched establishment influence.

Adding an unexpected twist to these tensions, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a member of the Kennedy family and longtime environmental lawyer, was appointed Health Secretary by Trump at the beginning of his current term.

His role in the government has been a source of both internal family strain and public fascination, as RFK Jr.’s own political views have at times diverged radically from the broader Kennedy tradition.

RFK Jr.’s appointment in the Trump cabinet was a controversial one, due to his anti-vaccine stance and embrace of conspiracy theories around healthcare.

In December 2024, more than 75 Nobel Laureates urged the US Senate to oppose Kennedy’s nomination for the position, saying he would ‘put the public’s health in jeopardy.’

Trump’s pattern of ‘insensitivity’

Before diving into Trump’s posts regarding the Kennedy family, it’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time the President has faced criticism for his remarks following a death.

Earlier this month, after filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner were found dead at their Los Angeles home, Trump was accused of responding insensitively to the tragedy.

In comments shared online, the President suggested Reiner’s death was linked to ‘the anger he caused others’ through his outspoken criticism of Trump and his political views.

The remarks, made while the Reiner family was still grieving, sparked widespread condemnation across social media and from public figures, who described the comments as inappropriate and lacking empathy.

Trump slammed over ‘insensitive’ posts

Just hours after news of Schlossberg’s death emerged, Trump took to Truth Social – the platform he founded – to share and amplify posts from supporters attacking the Kennedy family.

Notably, none of the messages acknowledged Schlossberg’s passing.

Instead, they focused on criticizing the family’s involvement with the Kennedy Center while praising recent developments tied to Trump.

One of the posts he shared claimed: “The Trumps have always been supporters of the arts. The Kennedys are supporters of the Kennedys.”

Another read: “They don’t raise money for it. They never show up. And the only Kennedy who has been there recently is a member of Trump’s cabinet.”

The timing of the posts prompted immediate backlash.

CNN anchor Jake Tapper condemned Trump’s actions in a post on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “On a day when the Kennedy family is grappling with an unimaginable personal loss, Donald Trump chose to use his platform to launch petty, vindictive attacks against them.

“Yet another stunning display of cruelty and utter lack of basic human decency.”

Social media users echoed Tapper’s criticism, with many expressing shock and anger at the President’s behavior.

One person wrote: “Total disrespect.”

Another said: “Just when you thought he couldn’t possibly be any worse, he astounds us all. Disgusting.”

A third user added: “So disrespectful.”

While somebody else commented: “This is an outrage.”
