Nicholas Cage is reportedly in ‘discussions’ to star in the sequels of two of his most popular movies, National Treasure and Face/Off

The 58-year-old is currently in the midst of a career renaissance after years of making small-budget indie films.

In 2021, he did a film called Pig, which is about a man who looking for the person who stole his pig.

The movie was a critical success and earned a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising Cage’s performance.

Barry Hertz, from the Globe and Mail, wrote in his review: “[Cage] offers something genuinely special: a perfect performance, and one which could not exist without every other performance that the actor has ever delivered.”

Since then, Cage had a leading role in 2022’s The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, a meta action-comedy where he plays an actor called ‘Nick Cage’.

This was another critically successful film that also grossed £29.1 million at the box office.

This return to form has now made Cage one of the most in-demand actors in Hollywood at the moment, with him soon being set to star in the vampire thriller titled Renfield.

However, he could reportedly now be returning to two of his most iconic franchises National Treasure and Face/Off.

A sequel to the 1997 action film, also starring John Travolta, has been in development since 2019, with Kong vs Godzilla director Adam Wingard at the helm.

Speaking to Empire, Wingard told them that the script has had to change due to Cage’s renaissance.

He explained: “That’s become totally the obvious way to go now. A couple of years ago, the studio maybe would have wanted a hot, young, up-and-coming actor or something.

“Now, Nicolas Cage is one of the hottest actors in Hollywood again.

“It has been probably the most challenging script we’ve ever worked on, for a lot of reasons.

“There’s so much pressure in wanting to make sure that it lives up to the legacy of that project.

“But every draft you have these things that just click in, and you’re like, ‘A-ha! That’s really what Face/Off is!’”

Meanwhile, National Treasure was a series he starred in, with the first film coming out in 2004 and its sequel National Treasure: Book of Secrets being releasing in 2007.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cage is in ‘various discussions’ to return to shoot the third film.

Jerry Bruckenheimer, the film’s producer, has confirmed that the script ‘is really good’ and it will be getting sent over to Cage.

Speaking to Comicbook.com, he said: “We’re working on the script right now. Hopefully [Cage] likes it, but it’s really good. So I think we’ll get it to him shortly.”

Plans had already been confirmed for a National Treasure Disney+ series, however, Cage distanced himself from them in a Reddit Q&A.

“No, the priority was to turn it into a TV show so I would say probably not,” the Ghost Rider star admitted.

However, it seems plans have now been changed and he could come back for a third film.
