North Korea has ignited concern after ‘firing a banned missile,’ according to reports.

South Korean defence officials have reportedly claimed that for the first time in five years, the country has put its intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) to the test.

Reportedly, the projectile was launched around mid-afternoon on March 24.

The isolated country’s move has been blasted by numerous public figures, including Japan’s state minister of defence, Makoto Onik.

He apparently claimed that the missile flew for about an hour before reaching Japan’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ), where it reportedly landed.

So far, there’s been no reports of damaged aircraft or vessels in the surrounding area.

Speaking about the incident, Onik stated: “At a time when the world is dealing with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, North Korea is pressing ahead with launches that unilaterally aggravate provocations against the international community, which is absolutely unforgivable.”

Professor of international studies at Ewha Woman’s University in Seoul, Leif-Eric Easley, said: “Despite economic challenges and technical setbacks, the Kim regime is determined to advance its missile capabilities.

“It would be a mistake for international policymakers to think the North Korean missile threat can be put on the back burner while the world deals with the pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.”

According to reports, the United Nations has banned North Korea from testing ballistic missiles and in the past, the country has supposedly faced international sanctions for proceeding with similar activity.

Despite this, the country has reportedly continued to work on its missile launches and apparently, in January, it proceeded to carry out its most projectile launches ever.
