John Edward Jones was just 26 when he died in a tragic accident in Nutty Putty Cave, located approximately 55 miles from Salt Lake City, in November 2009.

Jones was spelunking in the cave system in Utah alongside his brother, Josh.

The pair were looking for an extremely tight passage of the cave, nicknamed the ‘birth canal’.

However, after taking a wrong turn, John found himself upside down in the claustrophobic cave system.

Believing he’d found the tiny passage, Jones had to squeeze his body through.

Jones was around 6 ft tall and weighed 200lb, meaning it was fairly easy for him to become trapped.

Because of his size, he was unable to turn around or go backwards, and so was forced to press on further into the cave system in the hopes of finding a way out.

As Jones progressed further into the cave system, he came to a passage which was only 10 inches across and 18 inches high.

Jones used his breathing to try to narrow his chest to fit through the gap. However, after breathing out, he became completely wedged in the tiny cave.

Over 100 different rescue personnel came to Jones’ aid to try to get him out.

Because of his upside-down position, massive strain was placed on Jones’ cardiovascular system, with his heart having to work against gravity to pump blood around his body.

But tragically, their efforts were to no avail, and Jones eventually died from cardiac arrest after being trapped for 27 to 28 hours.

The fatal mistake made by Jones appears to be pressing on further into the cave system after knowing he had made a wrong turn.

If he’d simply stayed in place, it’s likely authorities would have had a much better chance of saving him.

One of the men on the scene, Shaun Roundy, has explained: “I reviewed the whole mission, wishing we’d have done this tiny detail differently or done that a little sooner. But it’s no use second-guessing things. We did our best.”

Since Jones’ death, the cave has been closed to the public to prevent others from meeting a similar fate.

His body has never been recovered from its trapped position, for fear of more people risking their lives attempting to retrieve it.
