A school is allowed to electric shock its disabled students after winning a legal battle.

Judge Rotenberg Center, in Massachusetts, has had its ban on electric treatment overturned by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

According to the centre, shock therapy is used to correct any aggressive or self-harming behaviour, and since the DC Circuit has classed it as medical treatment, the FDA no longer has any say on the matter.

The school has now released a statement on the issue, arguing why electric shock treatment can help the students ‘live in safety and freedom’.

It reads: “With the treatment, these residents can continue to participate in enriching experiences, enjoy visits with their families and, most importantly, live in safety and freedom from self-injurious and aggressive behaviours.”

Parents of children at the school added: “We have and will continue to fight to keep our loved ones safe and alive and to retain access to this life-saving treatment of last resort.”

Attorney Max Stern, who represented the parents, gave an explanation to Massachusetts News about why the centre wants to continue using the unorthodox treatment method.

“Our client of ours is a woman who hit her head against the wall so many times that her retinas were detached,” he said. “It was not until she went to multiple various other institutions, not until she got to JRC and got this treatment that she was able to get this behaviour under control, so she could have surgery to make it possible for her to see again.”

Currently, Judge Rotenburg Center is the only school that uses electric shock treatment, as it’s been labelled ‘torture’ by the United Nations.
