Sharron Davies has claimed that her comments regarding transgender athletes have left her facing financial difficulties.

The British swimming legend has opened up about how her criticism has impacted her working opportunities, along with getting hateful messages on social media and even receiving death threats.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Davies explained that she has been relying on her mother’s inheritance money, however, those funds are starting to run out.

The Olympian said: “The money’s nearly gone now. But I can’t back down.”

The swimmer-turned-broadcaster has been vocal against the idea of transgender women competing in sporting events, arguing that they have a genetic advantage over the competitors who were born female.

Davies added: “There’s been so much hate and bullying. It’s been very hard.

“Charities I’ve worked with for 30 years have dropped me, agents I’ve worked with for 30 or 40 years don’t use me anymore, because the trans activists can be so vicious and malicious – they go after your work, after your brand, they attack everything.”

Last month, the International Federation of Swimming (FINA) banned transgender swimmers from competing in elite competitions.

She has reiterated that her comments are not her being anti-trans but rather about the fairness and integrity of the sport.

Davies added: “I have friends with trans children, I have made friends with lots of transgender people during this process because the majority totally understand. A lot just want to live their lives and think this argument is making things more difficult for them.”

The introduction of the ban was partly due to the success of Lia Thomas, a transgender woman who had recently been nominated for the ‘NCAA Woman Of The Year’.

Davies won a silver medal at the 1980 Olympics, however, it is believed that she was robbed of gold as the woman who beat her was found to be part of East Germany’s sponsored doping of athletes.
