The UFC attempted to pay tribute to the Queen at its most recent event, however, sections of the crowd reportedly booed during the segment.

According to sports journalist Adam Hill on Twitter, some of the crowd at UFC 279, in the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, apparently chanted ‘USA, USA, USA’.

Discussing the event, he tweeted: “UFC PPV starts off with a moment of silence in remembrance of Queen Elizabeth, which is met with boos and then a USA chant.”

Following the tribute, former two-weight champion turned commentator Daniel Cormier said: “Us Americans are some savages.”

The UFC also posted its respects on its Twitter page, however, it has since turned off the comments.

The decision to share a tribute was met with confusion by UFC fans on social media, with one user posting: “It’s weird that the UFC would even acknowledge it. Was the Queen a big fan of mixed martial arts?”

Another commented: “No wonder. Why on earth would anyone try to force some grief and mourning onto an American MMA crowd? Absolutely ridiculous.”

However, others defended the action, with one person tweeting: “A bit disrespectful considering the Queen broke with tradition and ordered all UK flags at half mast, and the Royal band to play the American national anthem after 9/11.”

Most sports in the UK, including all football matches and a boxing card at the O2 Arena, were cancelled due to the Queen’s death.

Formula 1, which was in Monza, Italy, and the ICC cricket match at the Oval between South Africa and England all went ahead, however, they all held a moment of silence beforehand.

The English national team even sang ‘God Save The King’ for the first time in 70 years.
