DoorDash Issues Strong Warning Against Customers Who Choose Not To Tip
DoorDash has issued a firm warning to users who skip out on tipping their delivery drivers.
While tipping is technically optional in the United States, diners are generally expected to leave a gratuity.
According to CNBC, standard practices usually see customers adding a tip between 15 percent to 25 percent of their total bill, with the higher end reserved for exceptional service.
Now, the leading food delivery platform in America is making sure customers understand exactly what happens when they leave that tip section blank.
How the delivery app calculates your total bill
For those unfamiliar with the platform, DoorDash operates similarly to rivals like Uber Eats or Grubhub.
When checking out, customers are billed for the cost of their food, local taxes, a standard delivery fee, and a service charge, alongside an optional tip for the driver, known as a ‘Dasher.’
Because tipping is not mandatory, consumers are under no legal obligation to pay that extra amount.
However, the company has clarified that choosing not to tip could lead to some frustrating delays.
In fact, there have been a number of viral incidents in which Dashers have ended up in violent disputes with customers over the amount they have been tipped.
One man launched into a foul-mouthed rant after being tipped 25 percent.
The new pop-up warning for non-tippers
As reported by The Verge, via the DailyMail, DoorDash has rolled out a new pop-up alert that triggers whenever a user inputs $0 into the gratuity field before finalizing their order.
The prompt explicitly warns: “Orders with no tip might take longer to get delivered, are you sure you want to continue?
“Dashers can pick and choose which orders they want to do. Orders that take longer to be accepted by Dashers tend to result in slower delivery.”
According to reports, this pilot alert system has not yet rolled out universally across the United States. For instance, a reporter based in New Jersey encountered the warning, while another based in South Carolina did not.
DoorDash now warns customers that orders without a tip may take longer to be delivered:

Im a regular tipper but tbh tipping culture is getting wayy outta hand. They ask for tips every where. There should be no reason to tip the person taking your order at a fast food restaurant pic.twitter.com/cVhqyOUvYk
Why DoorDash is testing this reminder
In a statement to CBS, a DoorDash spokesperson explained that the alert is currently a test aimed at trying to ‘create the best possible experience for all members of our community.’
The company intends to monitor user feedback closely before deciding on a permanent implementation. So far, the company noted that the feature has already driven a ‘meaningful reduction’ in zero-dollar tips.
The representative further clarified that since delivery drivers operate as independent contractors, they maintain full autonomy to ‘accept or reject offers based on what they view as valuable and rewarding.’
They added: “While the vast majority of customers do leave a tip, offers that don’t include a tip can be seen as less desirable, this impacts our entire community, leading to longer wait times for customers, orders sitting longer at merchants, and less value for Dashers.”
A brief history of the company’s tipping policies
This is not the first time DoorDash’s payment structures have made headlines. The tech company previously faced intense scrutiny over how it distributed gratuities to its workforce.
As detailed by the New York Times, the platform previously utilized a model where drivers were promised a flat guaranteed rate per trip.
If a driver was promised $6.85 for a delivery and the customer chipped in a $3 tip, the driver’s total payout remained $6.85, with DoorDash effectively using the tip to cover their own base pay obligation.
At the time, CEO Tony Xu defended the practice on social media, writing: “We thought we were doing the right thing by making Dashers whole when a customer left no tip.
“What we missed was that some customers who did tip would feel like their tip didn’t matter.”
Following public backlash, DoorDash overhauled its payment structure to ensure drivers receive 100 percent of customer tips on top of their base pay.
However, because this change seemingly led to a dip in consumer willingness to tip, the company is now testing bolder strategies to encourage gratuities.
