The internet has been left divided over a viral video showing the moment a man violently punched a drunk bar goer who groped his wife.

Dating back at least a year, the CCTV footage has recently emerged on social media, sparking huge debates over how much force can be deemed reasonable while defending a woman from inappropriate behaviour.

Is it chivalrous or just plain violent? Most people, it seems, have landed somewhere in the middle.

In the controversial clip, which has been shared on X, a married couple can be seen getting ready to play a game of pool at an unidentified bar, which appears to be mostly empty.

As the husband wracks up the balls, and his wife prepares her pool cue, a second man can be seen approaching the woman in a bright orange top before putting his hands around her hips from behind.

Witnessing the encounter, the husband rushes towards the man, but in his haste to get towards the drunk patron, he ends up pushing his wife out the way, who is trying to discourage him from acting out.

As soon as the husband reaches the man in orange, he lands one swift and heavy punch in face, completely knocking him to the ground and appearing to knock him out in the process.

While the drunk man lies motionless on the ground, the wife can be seen feeling her face for injury after being hit with the pool cue during the crossfire.

Moments later, a security guard comes over to tell the man he needs to leave the bar.

Opinions divided on social media

Since the video emerged on X, the internet has been left divided over whether the husband’s behaviour was appropriate compared to the level of threat posed by the drunk man.

“Seems a little excessive as he could have handled it better,” one person commented, adding: “He could have killed this drunk with that punch he threw, Then what, spend the next 15 to 20 years in prison? Not worth it.”

“Out of line,” a second wrote. “One is drunk and disorderly. She could press further charges. Her husband committed assault and battery and should face criminal charges.”

A third added: “This is actually a very stupid way to respond. When there is no threat, violence is stupid. You gotta be aware and read situation, not jump around fighting everyone.”

But not everyone agreed, with one person commenting: “If you touch a man’s wife in an inappropriate se*ual way in front of him, you should be prepared to die. You might not die, but death should be a possible expected outcome. Act accordingly.”

Another suggested: “This was a traditional response. If people reacquainted themselves to this tradition, less inappropriate behaviour would occur.”

“Dude assaulted his wife in front of him, I don’t see an issue,” a third agreed.

One punch can kill

While most people can agree the drunk man’s behaviour was completely wrong, it’s important to note that one punch can, and frequently does, kill.

Therefore, it’s important to consider what is actually appropriate when attempting to teach someone a lesson over their actions.

In the US, if a person kills another person with a single punch, the charge can range anywhere from involuntary manslaughter to second-degree murder, depending on he context of the fight.

In the Kaufman County Courthouse case of 2012 in Texas, a man was charged with murder and received a 10-year prison sentence for a fatal knockout punch that caused a man to fall and hit his head of the pavement, taking his life.

Meanwhile, Taurus Buchanan was just 16 when he threw a single punch during a street fight in Louisiana in 1998, which led to a death. He was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to life in prison without parole. However this was later reduced by the Supreme Court, after he spent more than two decades behind bars.

In the case of this clip, none of the people have been identified, nor has the location of the bar, so it remains unknown whether any charges were brought against either party, or whether the drunk man experienced any lasting damage from his injuries.
