People Are Seriously Divided Over Waiter’s ‘Genius’ Trick To Increase Their Tip
A waiter is going viral after using a rather controversial trick to get a bigger tip, and people can’t decide if it was unreasonable or a genius move.
It’s no secret that wait staff are paid pretty poorly in the US, so maximizing tips is an absolute must if you want to earn a decent living.
The ‘tipping culture’ debate
Tipped workers are typically paid much lower than minimum wage, with the expectation that they’ll boost their income from paying customers, who will often tip between 15 and 20 percent of their bill to servers.
The subject has become a source of much debate over the years, with many people arguing the onus shouldn’t be on diners to pay servers on top of their bills, and instead should fall on employers to pay staff a fair wage.
But as it stands, servers are reliant on tips, which means they will likely go above and beyond to get them. Plus, it helps if you know how to play the game.
One man, who works as a server at Denny’s, certainly knows how to play the game, but not everyone agrees with his methods.

The internet is divided
The exchange has now been shared on Reddit, where people are split over whether the move was immoral or genius.
“I mean, gotta respect the hustle and there’s no victims here. I actually approve this one,” one Redditor commented, while another argued: “No victims?!?! Are you kidding? Go start a company and let someone steal 25 percent of a bill from you, and tell me again there’s no victims. You make me sick.”
Meanwhile, another person wrote: “I’m against tipping, and I’m not even mad at this. The customer literally paid $70 regardless.
“Employee should’ve blessed them with more stuff if they were gonna EMP the total though.”
One user suggested the server was ‘stealing’ from his employee, while another suggested it was no different to shoplifting, adding: “Customers are ultimately the victims, as they pay higher prices to cover loss due to theft.”
Regardless of which side of the fence you sit on, you’ve got to admit, it was a pretty bold move from the server, but it seems he’s far from the first person to have ever done it before.
“I actually did this once when I worked at a salon. I charged for a $3 service when they got a $7 service and gave me exactly $7,” one Reddit user shared.
“The lady ended up coming back and asking for a receipt and I was sh**ing bricks so scared I was going to get fired. It was so dumb of me to do that in hindsight. Risking my job for a few dollars.”

Another confessed they would keep coupons in their server notebook and ‘would apply them when someone told me to keep the change,’ adding that it made no difference to the customer.
“I’m not gonna lie when I was in my early 20s and was serving at whatever job I was at, I would regularly do this if it didn’t require a manager code,” a third admitted.
“There were times that I would only have $5 taken off with my number and they would add $10 for the gesture, no one ever found out because the tech guys for these kind of places are usually also the line cooks.”
The Denny’s controversy
In a post, which has now gone viral, a customer who visited a Denny’s restaurant shared a receipt from their visit, revealing they had asked the waiter to round the bill up to $70.
From the bill, it appears this would’ve been around a 20 percent tip on top of a bill of roughly $55, which isn’t too bad a gratuity for a fast food chain restaurant.
But, when you take a closer look at the receipt, you can see that not only did the server round the bill up to $70, he also added a cheeky little discount to increase the size of his tip.
By adding a 25 percent employee discount onto the bill, the waiter knocked $13.84 off the total owed, but instead of giving it back to the customer, he pocketed it as part of the tip, nearly doubling the total sum.
Fortunately, the customer appeared more impressed than annoyed, considering they’d agreed to pay the $70 already, because when an official Denny’s X account asked them for more details about the staff member, they didn’t respond.
