The tropical fruit symbolises hospitality, welcome and good luck in many cultures, however, it’s taken on a whole new saucy meaning in the world of non-monogamy.

So let’s take a look at what the upside-down pineapple symbolises and whether people actually use it here:

What does an upside-down pineapple mean?

An upside-down pineapple – which can be worn on clothing or jewellery, or even as a tattoo – is a subtle symbol that someone is a swinger or is looking for a swinger party.

Swinging is a s**ual practice that involves partner-swapping and s**ually engaging with others for recreational purposes.

Although the fruit is typically represented as upside-down, this isn’t always the case.

It’s said that if you see the symbol by someone’s front door, porch or mailbox, a swingers party is underway – so knock at your own risk…

What is the origin of the upside-down pineapple?

The exact origin of the upside-down pineapple is unclear, according to DigitalCulture. However, it’s believed the sign first began rising in popularity in the 1990s.

Urban Dictionary reportedly first referenced the term in 2006 – the site would then publish its own definition in 2017.

Do swingers really use the upside-down pineapple symbol?

Although the upside-down pineapple has become commonly associated with swingers, are those who practice actually using it? Absolutely!

People may use the pineapple emoji to symbolise their status when on dating apps. There’s also related content on TikTok and Instagram if you go digging.

The symbol is even used by swingers when doing everyday tasks – such as food shopping! They’ll simply add a pineapple to their trolley and flip it upside down.

With there now being cruise ships that are even tailored to people looking for ‘adult fun’, a pineapple or two may be a common sight here also.

What are other symbols for swinging?

S** positive symbols have become more popular used over time, and they’re subtle ways of communication if you’d prefer to keep things on the down-low. So it’s no surprise that new and bizarre ways of saying you’re a swinger have started.

In 2017, the New York Post published an article in which the outlet shared other signs that someone you know may be a swinger – here they are:

  • An upside-down pineapple door knocker (of course)
  • A black ring on your hand
  • Garden pampas grass outside your home
  • Switching your wedding ring to your right hand
  • Pink or purple decorations in your front garden
  • Garden gnomes
  • And white landscaping rocks

Of course, some of these signs could be spotted on people who aren’t swingers but if you already had your suspicions, they may help confirm it!
