A woman obliviously ran through an active shooting due to her noise-cancelling AirPods.
Technology and tragedy have merged in a surreal TikTok video which depicts a jogger unknowingly running through the midst of an active shooting.
The clip has gone viral on the social media platform with thousands taking to the comments.
Many viewers have warned that there are dangers to wearing noise-cancelling headphones while out and about.
One person writes: “As a runner, noise-cancelling is SO dangerous. Glad you’re safe, but you should always be vigilant and aware while running!!”
In agreement, another adds: “I never use the noise-cancelling feature in public for this reason.”
“I never wear both AirPods on my ears when I’m out in public. Let alone with noise-cancelling on. So dangerous,” a third comments.
Somebody else advises: “This is why you should never wear AirPods outside because it makes you less aware of your surroundings. Put it on one ear or else just make sure to look around.”
Christina, from Atlanta, can be seen jogging, smiling and posing with a peace sign in the viral video.
Unbeknownst to her, sirens are blaring in the background, signalling the chaos she was completely oblivious to.
On-screen text reads: “POV: your AirPods are on noise-cancelling and your phone is on DND [Do Not Disturb] so you don’t realise you just ran through an active shooting.”
In the post caption, she adds: “The sirens in the back and my blissful unawareness is sending me. But for real this was actually really intense and I’m so sorry for those injured and everyone impacted.”
In a follow-up TikTok, Christina responds to someone who commented: “I’m sorry but AirPods noise cancellation is not that good lol.”
The jogger takes the opportunity to detail further what happened, noting that ‘it’s still crazy’ for her to say aloud.
She expresses her disbelief over the incident and shares her reflections.
Christina begins: “Basically, I live in Midtown, Atlanta, and I went on a 5k run. I went my usual route and I put my phone on Do Not Disturb – I always do that when I go on my run.”
The TikToker adds that she thought she had a setting where important contacts could get through after calling more than once but later found out she didn’t have this setting on.
She continues: “I had my AirPods on noise-cancelling because I was running through residential streets, and there are always lots of people out there, and I never had any issues on those streets.
“To get to the residential streets, I had to run through the main parts of the city to get to those parts. So I ran past caution tape, a bunch of cops, ambulances, all this kind of stuff – swarms of people outside.”
Christina says that although she’s accustomed to similar scenes, they maybe weren’t ‘on that level’.
This familiarity led her to initially believe the sounds were attributed to construction or a car accident, further highlighting the shocking nature of the situation she found herself in.
“So I kept running,” Christina explains. “Then once I realised there were more cops going down the residential streets, clearly they were looking for the shooter. That’s when I kind of started thinking something was up.
“I took a quick break and I looked at my phone, and I saw my boyfriend had tried to call me and had texted me multiple times saying like, ‘Hey, it’s on your route, please answer’.”
After realising the severity of the situation, Christina promptly informed her boyfriend that she was ‘totally fine’ and swiftly altered her route home.
On the same day as Christina’s jog, Atlanta police were involved in a lengthy manhunt for gunman Deion Patterson.
He was charged with the murder and felony murder of one woman and four counts of attempted murder, per FOX 5 Atlanta.
Patterson was additionally charged with three counts of attempted battery, five counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony in the shooting.
