A Captain Sir Tom Moore troll has received a sentence after posting a ‘grossly offensive’ tweet on social media.

Joseph Kelly, of Castlemilk, Glasgow, was reportedly found guilty of sending the message at Lanark Sheriff Court in January.

The 36-year-old was apparently informed on March 30 that he would be sentenced to a community payback order that consists of 18 months of supervision. Plus, he reportedly will have to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work.

At Kelly’s trial, Sheriff Adrian Cottam reportedly told him he had passed the ‘custody threshold’. He supposedly went on to say that there could be an alternative to prison.

It’s believed Cottam stated: “My view is, having heard the evidence, that this was a grossly offensive tweet. The deterrence is really to show people that despite the steps you took to try and recall matters, as soon as you press the blue button that’s it.

“It’s important for other people to realise how quickly things can get out of control. You are a good example of that, not having many followers.”

Reportedly, the 36-year-old took to Twitter last year and tweeted: “The only good Brit soldier is a deed [sic] one.”

He apparently went on to add: “Burn auld fella, buuuuurn.”

Kelly’s defence agent, Tony Callahan, is believed to have said that at the time of the tweet, the man only had a small following on the platform, which meant he would not have realised how widely it could have circulated.

At the court, it was apparently heard how he quickly attempted to remove the message and that it was apparently only live for ’20 minutes’.

Callahan said: “He accepts he was wrong. He did not anticipate what would happen. He took steps almost immediately to delete the tweet but the genie was out of the bottle by then.

“His level of criminality was a drunken post, at a time when he was struggling emotionally, which he regretted and almost instantly removed.”
