The Avengers star has revealed that his career will be slowing down after learning that he is at a very high risk of suffering from Alzheimer’s.
While working on his docuseries Limitless, Hemsworth discovered his DNA includes two copies of the gene APOE4, one from his mother, and the other from his father – which studies have linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
Speaking to Vanity Fair, Hemsworth says: “Most of us, we like to avoid speaking about death.
“Then to all of a sudden be told some big indicators are actually pointing to this as the route which is going to happen, the reality of it sinks in. Your own mortality.”

He adds that his grandfather has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and often ‘slips in and out of Dutch’, English and a ‘mash-up and then maybe some other new words as well’.
Hemsworth emphasises, however, that he is not retiring by any means, but ‘it’s a more curated approach to things’.
The Ghostbusters star currently has four projects in the works, including an upcoming Avengers sequel where he will return as Thor and an untitled biopic about wrestling icon Hulk Hogan.
But after these, his schedule will start to clear.
A source tells Page Six: “He doesn’t plan to take on many roles because of [learning about his high risk for] Alzheimer’s.”
The Extraction actor also reveals in his interview with Vanity Fair that he is stepping back so he can spend more time with his family.
The Spiderhead star recalls moments when directors he has worked with him have expressed regret about being away from their partners and children for long periods of time, as they miss their kids growing up.
Hemsworth tells the publication: “And then you start talking about kids and family and going, ‘Oh my God, they’re getting older, they’re growing up and I keep slapping another movie on top of another movie’.

“Before you know it, they’re 18 and they’ve moved out of the house, and I missed the window.
“It really triggered something in me to want to take some time off. And since we finished the show, I’ve been completing the things I was already contracted to do.
“Now when I finish this tour this week, I’m going home and I’m going to have a good chunk of time off and just simplify. Be with the kids, be with my wife.”
