Jeffrey Carlson has tragically died aged 48.

Carlson was best known for his groundbreaking role as Zoe on the daytime TV soap opera All My Children.

The news of his death has been shared by his friend and co-star Susan Hart, who expressed her devastation over the loss.

Hart, who acted alongside Carlson in the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s production of Hamlet, took to Facebook to pay tribute to the late actor.

In her heartfelt post, Hart wrote: “Good night my sweet, sweet, sweet prince among men. No words for our despair at losing you Jeffrey Carlson.

“You were… oh God… no words… so, so loved and adored.

“For those of you that don’t know, I’m very sorry to share the news that Jeffrey passed away yesterday.”

Hart went on to say that she had respected the privacy of Carlson’s family by not sharing the news earlier but expressed her overwhelming grief and stated that she was still struggling to cope with the loss.

The cause of Carlson’s death has not been disclosed at this time.

Carlson’s portrayal of Zoe on All My Children, spanning over 50 episodes from 2006 to 2007, was a significant milestone for transgender representation on television.

The character’s gender transition was a pivotal storyline on the show, highlighting her journey through meetings with an endocrinologist, joining a transgender support group, and coming out to her parents.

In an interview with People magazine, Carlson reflected on the impact of Zoe’s character, stating that members of the transgender community engaged in conversations with fans on All My Children chatrooms.

He even received a touching letter from an 11-year-old girl who expressed her excitement, saying: “It’s cool you’re going to become a girl. Then we will have stuff in common.”

Aside from his role in All My Children, Carlson made notable contributions to Broadway, including portraying Billy in The Goat and Marilyn in Taboo.

He also appeared in the 2005 romantic comedy Hitch, playing the role of snobby restaurant critic Egon alongside Will Smith and Eva Mendes.

Upon hearing the news of Carlson’s passing, his All My Children co-star Eden Riegel said: “Devastated beyond measure to hear of the passing of the beautiful and gifted Jeffrey Carlson.

“I feel fortunate to have called this kind soul a friend and see his brilliant work up close.

“Gone far too soon – an unimaginable loss. Love you, Jeffrey. Rest friend.”

Actor Johnathan McClain, who had known Carlson for many years, wrote on Twitter: “I hadn’t seen Jeff for a long time but we knew each other well many years ago.

“He was an actor of startling power, depth, and charisma. The world is a lesser place for his no longer being in it.

“May his memory be a blessing.”
