People Think They’ve Spotted A ‘Backup Trump’ Walking Behind The President
People are joking that they may have spotted a ‘backup Trump’ after eagle-eyed viewers noticed a man in a recent video.
The viral moment has also revived one of the internet’s longest-running political conspiracy theories: the claim that Melania Trump sometimes uses a body double.
Social media users are once again dissecting footage involving Donald Trump after a mysterious lookalike briefly appeared behind him while he spoke to reporters near Air Force One.
The clip, filmed following the FIFA World Cup final in New Jersey, quickly spread online after comedian Jon Stewart highlighted the unusual moment during an episode of The Daily Show, per the New York Post.
Stopping the footage mid-segment, Stewart appeared genuinely amused by the man walking across the background.
“What’s up with the guy behind Trump? Can we see that again?” Stewart asked.
After replaying the clip, he joked: “Who the f*** is this guy? Oh my God. Is that a backup Trump?”
The comedian continued the bit by pretending he couldn’t tell which man was the real president.
“Wait… is that backup Trump or is that Trump? Is the one we’ve been dealing with backup Trump?”
The comments immediately sent social media into overdrive, with many people joining in on the joke while others tried to identify the mystery man.
Viewers became convinced they had found Trump’s ‘double’
The now-viral footage shows Trump speaking to reporters while another older man in a dark suit walks behind him near Air Force One.
From the angle captured on camera, the two men share several similarities, including light-colored hair, a similar build and comparable mannerisms while walking.
Although the resemblance sparked thousands of comments, multiple reports suggest the mystery man is actually Viktor Knavs, First Lady Melania Trump’s father, who had accompanied the president and first lady to the World Cup final.
Knavs is around the same age as Trump, though he is reportedly shorter and has noticeably grayer hair.
Still, that explanation didn’t stop people from having fun online.
One viewer joked: “Trump has a backup Trump now? That’s something I never expected to see.”
Another laughed: “For a second I genuinely thought there were two of them.”
A third wrote: “I had to replay it three times because I couldn’t believe how similar they looked.”
Others suggested it looked like “a stunt double,” while another joked: “Every president needs a spare.”
Despite the speculation, there is no evidence whatsoever that Trump uses a body double, and the jokes largely remained tongue-in-cheek.
The moment revived the long-running ‘Fake Melania’ conspiracy theory
The viral clip has also reignited discussion around one of the internet’s most famous political conspiracy theories, the baseless claim that Melania Trump is occasionally replaced by a body double during public appearances.
The theory first exploded in 2017 after footage showed Melania wearing oversized sunglasses while standing beside her husband during a White House event, per the BBC.
Some social media users began comparing facial features, hairstyles and clothing choices, claiming the woman wasn’t really the first lady.
The conspiracy gained so much attention that it became known online as “#FakeMelania.”
President Trump eventually addressed the claims directly in 2019 after another appearance fueled renewed speculation.
“The Fake News photoshopped pictures of Melania, then propelled conspiracy theories that it’s actually not her by my side in Alabama and other places,” Trump wrote on social media at the time.
“They are only getting more deranged with time!”
Since then, the theory has resurfaced numerous times whenever Melania appears wearing large sunglasses, hats or clothing that partially obscures her face.
Most recently, after she attended the 2026 FIFA World Cup final alongside Trump, some social media users once again questioned whether she was really the first lady, per the Irish Star.
Many pointed to her reflective sunglasses as supposed evidence, although there has never been any credible proof supporting the claims.
In reality, experts and news organizations have repeatedly dismissed the theory as an internet conspiracy with no factual basis.
While Jon Stewart’s comments were clearly intended as comedy, the clip demonstrates how quickly unusual moments involving high-profile public figures can spark widespread speculation online.
The resemblance between Viktor Knavs and Trump appears to have been enough to fool viewers from a particular camera angle, creating a moment that social media quickly transformed into a meme.
Likewise, the ‘Fake Melania’ theory continues to resurface despite years of debunking.
Facial recognition comparisons, high-resolution photographs and numerous public appearances have consistently shown no evidence that Melania Trump has been replaced by a body double.
Instead, many experts point to changing camera angles, lighting, facial expressions, fashion choices and accessories such as sunglasses as the reasons people believe they notice differences.
That hasn’t stopped the internet from continuing the jokes.
Following Stewart’s segment, one person wrote: “Backup Trump has entered the chat.”
Another added: “Now I’m waiting for someone to find Backup Melania standing next to him.”
A third commented: “The internet never misses anything… even when there’s nothing to miss.”
