Donald Trump‘s second term continues to divide America, but a newly released national poll reveals what they really think.

The survey, conducted by YouGov on behalf of The Economist, revealed a clear majority of Americans now share one particular concern about the president.

The findings come as Trump faces ongoing scrutiny over his financial disclosures, cryptocurrency earnings and the controversial acceptance of a luxury jet from Qatar.

Majority of Americans share one opinion about Trump

According to the latest Economist/YouGov poll, released on July 7, six in 10 Americans believe Trump is using the presidency for his own personal benefit.

The survey found that 60 percent of respondents said Trump is using the office for personal gain, while just 27 percent disagreed.

Support for that view differed sharply depending on political affiliation.

According to the poll, 94 percent of Democrats believed Trump was using the presidency for personal benefit, alongside 69 percent of independents. Even among Republicans, 16 percent shared that view.

The Economist noted that around one in five people who voted for Trump also believed he was using the office for personal gain.

Poll also reveals Trump’s approval rating

The same Economist/YouGov survey also measured Americans’ overall opinion of Trump’s job performance.

It found that 35 percent of Americans approve of the way Trump is handling the presidency, while 61 percent disapprove, giving him a net approval rating of minus 25.

According to YouGov, that places Trump just above the lowest approval rating recorded during either of his presidencies, which stood at minus 26.

The Economist’s own approval tracker similarly placed Trump’s net approval at minus 23 during the same period.

The publication also noted that Trump’s current approval rating is lower than Joe Biden’s was at the equivalent stage of his presidency.

Independent voters appear to be turning away

While Trump continues to maintain strong support among Republican voters, the latest polling suggests independent voters have become increasingly critical.

According to YouGov, 71 percent of independents now disapprove of Trump’s performance in office, while just 21 percent approve.

That gives Trump a net approval rating of minus 51 among independent voters, which the polling organisation says is the lowest level recorded across either of his terms.

By comparison, at roughly the same point during Trump’s first presidency, his net approval among independents stood at around minus six.

Financial disclosures have attracted renewed scrutiny

The polling comes just days after Trump filed his latest financial disclosure.

According to Reuters, the filing showed Trump earned more than $1.4 billion from cryptocurrency-related ventures during 2025.

Reuters reported that almost $800 million of those earnings came through World Liberty Financial, a cryptocurrency company co-founded by Trump’s sons, while approximately $635 million came from sales of his $TRUMP meme coin.

Trump has defended those earnings, telling reporters on July 1: “I’ve had a good career, a great career.”

“I don’t know if I’ve had a better career in politics or business, but I had a great career in business and, you know, you saw the cash,” he added.

Qatar jet continues to divide opinion

Another issue surrounding Trump’s presidency has been his acceptance of a luxury Boeing 747 aircraft gifted by Qatar.

The plane is now being used as Air Force One, with Trump previously saying it will eventually be transferred to his presidential library after he leaves office.

The Economist/YouGov poll also asked Americans about the aircraft.

While respondents slightly preferred the jet’s new red, white and blue colour scheme over the previous design, only 18 percent supported Trump’s plan to transfer the aircraft to his presidential library after his presidency, while 51 percent opposed the proposal.

White House rejects criticism

Responding to the findings, the White House dismissed suggestions that Trump’s business interests influence his decisions as president.

White House spokesman Davis Ingle told USA Today: “President Trump only acts in the best interests of the American public – which is why they overwhelmingly re-elected him to this office, despite years of lies and false accusations against him and his businesses.”

Ingle added: “President Trump’s assets are in a trust managed by his children.”

Inflation remains Americans’ biggest concern

Beyond Trump’s approval ratings, The Economist’s polling also found inflation remains the issue Americans care about most.

Around 30 percent of respondents identified inflation and rising prices as the country’s biggest concern, ahead of jobs, the economy, healthcare and immigration.

The publication also reported that Trump’s approval for handling inflation has fallen to its lowest point during his second term.

What the poll ultimately found

According to the Economist/YouGov survey, Americans remain sharply divided over Donald Trump’s presidency.

While Republican support for the president remains relatively strong, the latest polling suggests many independents have become increasingly critical, and a majority of Americans now believe Trump is using the presidency for personal gain.

The survey was conducted between July 3 and July 6 among 1,603 U.S. adults and carries a margin of error of plus or minus 3.3 percentage points, according to YouGov.
