Robert Carradine’s family has issued a cause of death update as devastating details about his passing have emerged.

Carradine was one of Hollywood’s most recognizable faces across multiple generations of film and television.

Born in 1954 to legendary actor John Carradine, the star was part of one of the most celebrated acting dynasties in American entertainment history.

As the youngest of John Carradine’s sons, the actor shared his Hollywood bloodline with brothers David, Keith, Bruce, and Christopher Carradine.

Growing up surrounded by talent, he seemed destined for the screen from the very beginning, and he delivered on that promise in a big way.

A career that spanned generations

Carradine’s career was nothing short of remarkable.

He made his film debut alongside the legendary John Wayne in the 1972 western The Cowboys, a remarkable introduction to the industry for any young actor.

He followed that with appearances in critically acclaimed films, including Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets and the Oscar-winning Coming Home, establishing himself as a serious dramatic talent early on.

But it was 1984’s Revenge of the Nerds that cemented his place in pop culture history. Playing the lovable, underdog Lewis Skolnick, Carradine became an icon for anyone who ever felt like an outsider.

The film was a massive commercial success and spawned three sequels, with Robert reprising his beloved role each time. Lewis Skolnick wasn’t just a character; he was a cultural touchstone for an entire generation.

A whole new generation then discovered Carradine through the Disney Channel series Lizzie McGuire, where he played Sam McGuire, the warm and bumbling father of Hilary Duff’s titular character, across 65 episodes between 2001 and 2004.

The personal life behind the smile

Behind the warmth and humor he projected on screen, Carradine’s personal life carried its share of heartbreak.

One of the defining tragedies of Robert’s personal life came in 2009, when his half-brother David Carradine was found dead in a hotel room in Bangkok, Thailand, under deeply disturbing and disputed circumstances, per Men’s Journal.

David was discovered with ropes tied around his neck and g**itals in a closet at the Swissotel Nai Lert Park Hotel.

Thai authorities eventually ruled the death as accidental asphyxiation, though the family long questioned those findings and hired forensic expert Dr. Michael Baden to conduct an independent investigation.

The bizarre and public nature of David’s death sent shockwaves through the family, and for Carradine, those shockwaves never truly subsided.

Tributes pour in

Following the news of Robert’s passing, tributes flooded in from across the entertainment world.

Perhaps the most heartfelt came from Hilary Duff, who shared her grief on Instagram.

“This one hurts,” the actress wrote. “It’s really hard to face this reality about an old friend. There was so much warmth in the McGuire family and I always felt so cared for by my on-screen parents. I’ll be forever grateful for that. I’m deeply sad to learn Bobby was suffering. My heart aches for him, his family, and everyone who loved him.”

His brother, Keith, also paid tribute, saying Carradine was ‘profoundly gifted’ and describing him as ‘wise and utterly accepting and tolerant.’

“I want to celebrate him for his struggle,” Keith said, per the Nightly, “and celebrate his beautiful soul.”

Robert Carradine’s cause of death

Carradine died at the age of 71, and his family have now confirmed the heartbreaking cause of death.

In a statement issued to Deadline, the family revealed that Robert died by s**cide after enduring a nearly two-decade battle with bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that involves extreme mood swings, according to Mayo Clinic. It can include emotional highs and lows.

“In a world that can feel so dark, Bobby was always a beacon of light to everyone around him,” the family said.

“We are bereft at the loss of this beautiful soul and want to acknowledge Bobby’s valiant struggle against his nearly two-decade battle with bipolar disorder.”

Devastating details emerge

What makes the loss all the more devastating is just how long Carradine had been fighting this battle privately.

The actor’s family confirmed that his mental health struggles were directly triggered by the death of his brother David back in 2009.

The trauma of losing David in such shocking and public circumstances sent Carradine into a spiral, and he was subsequently diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a condition he would wrestle with for the rest of his life.

The family said they made the deliberate choice to speak openly about Carradine’s illness, hoping to strip away the stigma that so often surrounds mental health conditions.

“We hope his journey can shine a light and encourage addressing the stigma that attaches to mental illness,” the family said.

Keith Carradine echoed that sentiment directly: “We want people to know it, and there is no shame in it.”

The beloved actor spent nearly twenty years quietly carrying one of the heaviest burdens a person can face, all while continuing to show up for his family and, when he could, for the work he loved.

Robert Carradine is survived by his three children, including actress Ever Carradine.
