A spokesperson for Ferguson tells The Independent that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer and she’s recently undergone a single mastectomy.

A mastectomy is a surgical removal which involves removing a breast, partially or completely.

The spokesperson tells the publication: “She was advised she needed to undergo surgery which has taken place successfully.”

They go on to say that Ferguson is ‘receiving the best medical care’ and that she is now ‘recuperating’ with her family.

“The Duchess wants to express her immense gratitude to all the medical staff who have supported her in recent days,” the spokesperson continues.

Following her diagnosis, Ferguson has appeared on her podcast – Tea Talks with the Duchess of York – to warn others.

The 63-year-old reveals that she was diagnosed with breast cancer during a routine mammogram which she hadn’t felt like going to until her sister insisted.

The Duchess recalls: “I will normally do what she says because she gets so cranky. And she said, ‘No, go, I need you to go. I need you to go’.”

Ferguson says she went to an NHS check-up at London’s Royal Free Hospital and an early form of the disease – a ‘shadow’ – was found and that it was needed to be ‘immediately sorted’.

“I’ve talked to so many sufferers with cancer, that I can glean from them certain tips that can help me through this moment,” the mother-of-two says.

“I’m taking this as a real gift to me to change my life, to nurture myself – to stop trying to fix everyone else.”

Many fans of the royal family have taken to social media and told Ferguson she is in their prayers.

One person pens: “That’s very sad News. I wish Fergie well.”

“Hopefully she will make a fast recovery ladies,” another adds. “Make sure you check yourselves, it might save your life.”

A third Twitter user writes: “This is very sad to hear poor soul. Prayers for her recovery.”

According to the NHS website, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the UK. It’s typically diagnosed in women over the age of 50 but younger women also get it.

If detected at an early stage there is a good chance of recovery.

Typical symptoms include a rash on or around your nipple, a lump or swelling in either of your armpits, dimpling on the skin of your breast, discharge from either nipple and a change in size or shape of one or both breasts.
