A COVID-19 vaccination video is facing backlash over its ‘staggering’ lack of diversity.
Channel 9, a network in Australia, recently dropped the TV advert encouraging citizens to get the jab. But people are taking to Twitter to point out that the entire cast of men and women is white.
In the video, there are several of the network’s biggest names, including Hamish and Andy, Peter Overton, Erin Molan, Georgie Gardner, Liz Hayes, Scott Cam and Eddie McGuire.
After watching the clip, one person wrote: “Wow, what a unique and inclusive cast you have. Thank goodness for the representation displayed here today.
Pitching in, another added: “The message is great but the lack of cultural diversity is staggering.”
“This ad will really hit the mark for some… but for others it won’t at all simply because they won’t relate to it due to its lack of diversity. Hopefully, there is a part two on the way,” a third said.
A fourth pointed out: “Well intentioned, but maybe not the best way to appeal to a broader society? Out of the eight women featured, it’s not just that all are white (like all the men are also), but even within that subgroup, it is so limited – seven are blondes and @amyshark is the only one that is even a brunette.”
But others who have viewed the Channel 9 ad have argued that many people are losing the point of the video, which is to encourage people to get a vaccination against coronavirus.
The vaccination program in Australia has been unhurried in comparison to other countries, due to a slow-going rollout and supply shortage.
Plus, many Australians have shared their concerns over the AstraZeneca vaccine.
