Darius Campbell Danesh, who rose to fame on Pop Idol, has died, aged 41.

According to reports, the Scottish singer, who had hits with songs such as ‘Colourblind,’ was found dead in his US apartment on August 11.

His cause of death is unknown at this time.

A statement issued by his family reportedly reads: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Darius Campbell Danesh. Darius was found unresponsive in bed in his apartment room in Rochester, Minnesota, on August 11 and was pronounced dead in the afternoon by the local medical examiner’s office.

“The local police department has confirmed that there were no signs of intent or suspicious circumstances. The cause of his sudden death is unknown at this stage while medical examinations continue.

“We ask that you kindly respect our wishes for privacy at this time whilst we come to terms with the tragic loss of our son and brother.”

After hearing the heartbreaking news, fans have taken to social media and paid tribute to the theatre star.

One tweeted: “What sad news. Rest in peace Darius.”

“41 is no age, what a shame. Thoughts to his family and loved ones,” a second wrote.

A third said: “Saw him in @FHTEMusical and he was fantastic, so sad to hear this.

“How incredibly sad. No age! Love and thoughts to his family and close ones,” a fourth commented.

Someone else added: “Sad to hear this. I always had a soft spot for Darius as his single ‘Colour Blind’ was in the charts [at the] same time as my daughter was born.”

Danesh appeared on the ITV talent show Popstars back in 2001. He then went on to appear in the first Pop Idol, which was eventually won by Will Young.

Following the programmes, the 41-year-old forged a successful stage career for himself and appeared in Chicago, Guys and Dolls, and Gone With the Wind.
