While it isn’t mandatory, tipping is a huge part of American culture.

When visiting restaurants and bars, customers are expected to tip and it usually goes unquestioned.

However, one customer was left gobsmacked when she spotted an unusual charge on her bill.

Ashley Nicole has taken to TikTok and shared what happened.

In her post, which has been viewed over a million times, she explains to her followers that she decided to go out to one of her ‘favourite restaurants’ but this time, she and her friend noticed something on the receipt.

“The weirdest thing just happened to me. It’s cold and it’s rainy in LA, so me and my bestie decided to go out to dinner. We go to one of my favourite restaurants,” she says in the video.

“This is the Osteria La Buca. It is an Italian restaurant here in LA and I’ve been to it multiple times.

“We enjoy our meal. We get the check, we pay for our check, and as we are like signing the tip and stuff, we notice something.”

Nicole then shows a screenshot of the receipt, which looks pretty standard at first glance.

The order is made up of house ricotta, crispy potatoes, short rib ravioli, Diet Coke and a New York steak.

But underneath the steak, there’s an ’employee health’ charge of $4.75.

Nicole explains: “Here’s the receipt, and if you notice down here towards the bottom, there is a $4.75 cent charge for employee health.

“Do you see that, a five per cent charge for employee health? My immediate thought was, ‘What is employee health? What does that mean?’.

“We run through a couple of options and I’m like, ‘You know what? I’m just gonna ask’.”

Nicole says she asked the hostess about the charge as she’d never heard of it, and they apparently said the fee covers employee health care.

The TikToker continues: “I’ve never heard of that before, ever.

“And I had to find out – is that normal and have I been living under a rock?

“Is it a normal thing or is this weird because I’ve never experienced this before and it feels weird, but maybe this is normal elsewhere.

“Let me know ’cause I’ve never seen this before.”

People are taking to the comments and reacting to the charge, with many viewers agreeing that they’d never heard of it too.

One says: “This is insane. I pay so much for my own health care and now restaurant employees! No way. That’s the owner’s responsibility.”

Another adds: “Not normal! Shouldn’t the business be paying for the employee health care, not the customer?!”

A third person says: “I’ve never seen it.”

While a fourth writes: “Definitely never seen that before! Seriously it’s getting ridiculous to go out now with extra charges!”
