Boy Swallows Universe is a seven-part drama series set in Brisbane, Australia, in the 1980s.
The show revolves around a middle schooler named Eli Bell (Felix Cameron) and his older brother, Gus (Tiger Halley).
The brothers live in a struggling suburban neighbourhood with their mother Frankie (Phoebe Tonkin) and their stepdad, Lyle (Travis Fimmel).
The show also stars Frances Brown and Adam Briggs as incarcerated friends and mentors to Eli.
Its official synopsis reads: “A young boy growing up in the suburbs of 1980s Brisbane faces the harsh realities of life – and the looming dangers that threaten his family.”
Boy Swallows Universe has already generated some positive feedback online, with a rating of 86 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes and 8.2/10 on IMDb.
Netflix viewers have been equally vocal on social media, with one taking to X (formerly known as Twitter) to write: “I power-watched Boy Swallows Universe on Netflix last night, after becoming transfixed.
“It has a fantastic storyline and keeps you on the brink of tears and in stitches laughing
“The actors shine but Felix Cameron as young Eli Bell is phenomenal. That kid is going places.”

Another agreed: “Boy Swallows Universe is SO DAMN GOOD.
“One of the best shows this country has produced. I’m finding it extremely hard not to swallow it in one gulp.
“Gonna take it one day at a time. The lead fella is beyond brilliant.
“Congrats to everyone involved. 5 star SUBLIME.”
“I just binge-watched Boy Swallows Universe over two nights! I absolutely loved it, and I couldn’t stop watching it,” another tweeted.
“I felt a range of emotions. Love, pride, fear, laughter and tears, as I could relate to some of it. 10 out of 10. Congrats to the writer, producer and fabulous cast!”
And that’s not all.
Boy Swallows Universe has also garnered critical acclaim, too.
Luke Buckmaster for The Guardian writes: “So much of this series impresses. The directors capture crime and scumbaggery in a way we don’t see very often – with a bright and juicy colour palette and an air of heart and humour.
“The show never looks down on characters, nor does it turn a blind eye to their terrible behaviour.”
He concludes: “When it’s good, this series can be very, very good: a one-of-a-kind Australian period piece.”
