Disney’s Snow White ride creator has responded to the ‘non-consensual’ kiss criticism.

Jim Shull has argued that the team behind its creation did a ‘spectacular job’ and people need to understand that ‘cultural changes occur over decades’.

On Twitter, he penned: “It must be acknowledged that in the context of the tale on which film is based that the ride is accurate. People are of course allowed to dislike the story but the Imagineering team did a spectacular job!”

He continued: “Many European fairy tales were published over 200 years ago with an expressed purpose to both entertain and educate. Reading books was a valued public occupation.

“In a version of the German fairy tale Schneeweibchen (‘Snow White’), the comatose young woman is revived when one of the prince’s servants drops her body which dislodges the poisoned apple from her throat and the prince didn’t kiss her.”

Many people have agreed with his comments online, with one person writing: “The working of Imagineering is sensational! The criticism is laughable.

“We are talking about a princess ‘Someday My Prince Will Come’ and ‘I’m Wishing,’ a fairy tale that aims to show that love is the most powerful magic. It’s getting sad.”

Pitching in, another said: “The spell that put Snow White to sleep says love’s first kiss will wake the princess. She met and fell in love with the prince, implying consent. Had it been any other man paying respect to her with a kiss, the spell wouldn’t have brought her back. Just saying.”

However, journalist Nichi Hodgson recently argued on Good Morning Britain that ‘Disney has a moral duty’ to be an ‘ethical business’.

She said: “Many parents don’t know what their children are watching. And may not be paying attention.

“Disney has a moral duty. They can be an ethical business if they want to be. They make billions every year from their films. Children watch their films from a very young age, and they are some of the first stories they imbibe.

“The original story does not end with a kiss, Disney invented that kiss. They do have responsibility for changing the original plotline.”
