A waitress from Michigan was fired after receiving a remarkably generous $10,000 tip on a bill of just $32.43.

Linsey Boyd, who worked at the Mason Jar Cafe, was dismissed following the incident.

However, the establishment has insisted that her termination was unrelated to the gratuity.

Since Boyd’s dismissal, the eatery has been flooded with critical reviews from outraged individuals.

Boyd addressed the controversy in a now-deleted Facebook post: “I was willing to share a $10,000 tip, but was reciprocated with hate and rumors.”

The unexpected turn of events began when an anonymous benefactor, who had recently attended a friend’s funeral, decided to make a kind gesture in honor of his loved one.

According to general manager Tim Sweeney, who spoke with the Detroit Free Press, the donor requested that the tip be divided among the staff, which resulted in each of the eight servers receiving approximately $1,250.

Despite the generosity behind the act, tensions arose.

Boyd did not provide specifics regarding the source of the conflict but acknowledged that ‘drama ensued.’

Reports suggest that disagreements may have emerged over whether employees who were not working that day were entitled to a portion of the tip.

Attempting to clear up any misunderstandings, Boyd found herself at the centre of further controversy. She later received a phone call informing her of her dismissal.

“Finally… I got the call… I got the call, that I am fired… Now, I’m without a job for the first time since I was 15,” she said.

The owners of the Mason Jar Cafe, Able Martinez and Jayme Cousins, defended their decision, stating that Boyd’s termination had ‘nothing to do with the tip.’

In a Facebook post, they explained, per The Independent: “A claim has been made about a recent employee of ours. We cannot comment on the nature of her losing her job due to labor laws and to protect the staff involved.

“However, I will say it had nothing to do with the tip. She did receive the entire tip, she did not pay taxes on it (the business did). Yes, she shared the tip at the request of the man that left it.”

The restaurant owners stressed their commitment to their staff, highlighting efforts to maintain long-term employees, support college students with summer work, and provide financial assistance for education.

“We do everything in our power not to lose staff,” they added. “We hope it is clear this was not a decision made lightly or hastily.”

Boyd, however, has expressed her disappointment in how events unfolded.

“This amazing act of kindness has brought out some serious ugliness, and I am taking the fall for it all,” she commented.

The incident has sparked debate online, with many questioning the fairness of Boyd’s dismissal and voicing support for her.

Meanwhile, the Mason Jar Cafe continues to defend its stance, maintaining that its decision was unrelated to the tip itself.
