Mastermind viewers have accused a contestant of ‘cheating’ after ‘noticing a tactic’ he was using and branding it ‘unacceptable’.

It all started when Andrew Fanko took to the famous black chair on March 21 to answer questions about African World Heritage sites, which was the topic he had specialist knowledge on.

He scored seven points and returned for the General Knowledge round where he decided to use only the surname when the answer was a person.

One question was: “The 1991 album ‘Simply The Best’ which reached number two in the UK is a compilation of hits by which singer?”

To which he responded: “Turner.”

The programme’s host, Clive Myrie, then added: “Tina Turner, yes.”

Disgruntled viewers then took to social media to call him out for ‘cheating’.

One tweeted: “Sorry, but saying Turner as an answer is not acceptable, it’s Tina Turner. #Mastermind needs to go back to making contestants give full names unless someone is better known by a single name.”

Another added: “This thing on #Mastermind where people just give surnames as answers because a)It’s quicker and b) Means they don’t need to learn first names can get in the bin.”

“Really p****s me off when people only give the surname of an answer,” fumed a third. “Far too easy and shouldn’t be allowed.”

However, others took aim at those complaining, saying it was always something that had happened on the programme.

One viewer wrote: “To all the people moaning about Andrew on #Mastermind only saying a surname. This has been going on for ages, with Clive saying the whole name afterwards. Please pay attention.”

A second said: “The guy who led and then won did exactly the same during his specialist subject round, so fair play for picking up on it and using the same tactic.”
