Ex-Formula 1 boss Max Mosley’s cause of death has been confirmed at an inquest.

According to reports, the Westminster Crown Court heard that the 81-year-old died by suicide after ‘shooting himself in the head’ once he learned about his ‘very limited life expectancy’.

Mosley was reportedly found at his London home on May 23 last year. It’s believed he informed his personal assistant of his intention to take his own life and left a suicide note, because he was in ‘debilitating pain’.

Senior Coroner Dr Fiona Wilcox, who chaired the inquest, reportedly concluded that she was ‘satisfied’ he had intended to kill himself.

She apparently stated: “I am also entirely satisfied Mr Mosley would not have undertaken this action but for the distressing and debilitating terminal lymphoma.”

In her concluding remarks, the senior coroner called him a ‘remarkable man,’ before adding: “I would like to pass my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr Mosley. I wish you all well.”

The court also heard how Mosley had ‘explored all treatment options’ and made the decision once he was moved to palliative care.

When fans heard of his death, many took to social media and paid tribute to him.

One wrote: “I was aware that Max Mosley had expedited his demise, but I didn’t know the method until today.

“It’s sad to think of him executing that brutal plan, alone, but for 81 years he was steadfastly typical of his unique self: clever, resolute, resourceful, independent, truly a one-off.”

“So sad to learn Max Mosley killed himself,” said a second. “I’m not interested in his private life, more the millions of lives his tireless work for the FIA helped save.

“To me, he was always available, interesting, interested and unfailingly helpful. Awful it should end that way.”

A third added: “So sad to hear how Max Mosley took his own life. More needs to be done to legalise assisted dying.

“I had cancer and the chemo treatment was horrendous. I cannot imagine the pain he endured with terminal cancer.”
