Mindhunter director David Fincher has confirmed the future of the hit Netflix series.

The show is produced by actress Charlize Theron and Fincher, who is known for being the mastermind behind crime films such as Seven, Zodiac, and Gone Girl.

It follows FBI agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Trench (Holt McCallany) as they discover the Behavioral Science Unit in the late 1970s and begin trying to understand how serial killers think.

The second season of Mindhunter concluded in 2019 and there has been speculation about what could happen in season three and which real-life serial killers could be explored in it.

The show included infamous criminals such as Charles Manson, Ed Kemper, and Wayne Williams in its first two seasons.

Especially with the rise in interest in true crime series due to the success of Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, fans have been requesting more information about it.

However, it seems they might be disappointed, as Fincher has played down a possibility of a third season.

Speaking to the French outlet Le Journal du Dimanche, he explains: “I’m very proud of the first two seasons. But it’s a very expensive show and, in the eyes of Netflix, we didn’t attract enough of an audience to justify such an investment [for season three].”

However, the Fight Club director praised Netflix for giving him the opportunity to make the show and thanked them for still continuing to work with him on other projects.

He continues: “They took risks to get the show off the ground, gave me the means to do Mank the way I wanted to do it, and they allowed me to venture down new paths with The Killer [his next feature].

“It’s a blessing to be able to work with people who are capable of boldness.”

Despite the news, fans are still pushing for a third season of Mindhunter, even if it is not on Netflix.

One fan suggests: “Apple TV you know what to do.”

A second viewer says: “Absolutely brilliant show, just can’t get my head around why there’s not another series or more.”

“Netflix broke as hell man, sell the rights to HBO and get on with it,” adds another fan.

Someone else comments: “If Netflix was a real one they would’ve let everyone know Mindhunter was cancelled so at least someone like HBO could buy and revive it but no.

“They cancelled it so they could hold on to it for nothing.”

A fifth viewer writes: “Sooo… do we crowdfund? Can someone find out how much they need for a third season?”
