A young mum has quit American Idol after Katy Perry’s ’embarrassing’ and ‘hurtful’ comments.

The popular singing show has breaded some chart-topping contestants over the years, including Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson and Adam Lambert.

Perry joined the show as a judge in 2018.

But she has now come under fire for her comments to one contestant.

It all started when Sara Beth Liebe, 25, entered the American Idol competition and she performed in front of Perry and the two other judges – Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan.

When she revealed she was a mum, the ‘California Gurls’ singer got up and pretended to fall on the table in shock.

At the time, the contestant jokingly said: “If Katy lays on the table, I think I’m going to pass out.”

This prompted Perry to make an apparent remark about her being a young mother as she responded: “Honey, you’ve been laying on the table too much.”

Perry then asked the contestant if it was her dream to be a singer.

The ‘Roar’ artist added: “If it’s not your dream, you might need to leave because there’s a lot of dreams behind you.”

The young mum went on to sing Amy Winehouse’s ‘You Know I’m No Good’.

But the ‘Firework’ singer demanded more from her.

Perry asked the young mum to sing ‘Bennie and The Jets’ by Elton John – which got a much better reception from the judges and sent her through to the next round.

During the live performances, Liebe performed ‘Roxanne’ by The Police.

But after she finished, the 25-year-old announced that she was quitting the show.

She told the three judges: “This opportunity is really rad, but this is actually gonna be my last performance ’cause my heart’s at home.

“So I’m gonna get home to my babies. They kinda need me. So thank you.”

Perry, Bryan and Richie all wished her the best and urged her to come back on the show in the future.

The ‘California Gurls’ singer told Liebe: “Sara Beth, I know life is scary. I also know that it’s easier to walk away than to be rejected. But then I also know that you lose out on your fullest potential.

“Remember that self-love is just as big as motherly love.”

Liebe’s decision to leave the show comes after she spoke out against Perry’s comments in a TikTok post.

In the video, which has received over 45,000 likes, the singer described the comments as ‘hurtful’.

She said: “It was embarrassing to have that on TV, and it was hurtful.

“I think that women supporting and uplifting other women is so cool, and I think that mum-shaming is super lame.”
