The FBI has delivered grim news in the disappearance of Today show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy.

Nancy was last seen at her $1 million Tucson home on the evening of January 31, when her daughter Annie and son-in-law Tommaso Cioni visited her.

When she failed to appear at her regular Sunday church service the following morning, something completely out of character for the devoted woman of faith, family members immediately knew something was terribly wrong.

Relatives rushed to the 84-year-old’s residence for a welfare check and quickly contacted emergency responders.

What they discovered launched what Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos would later confirm was a criminal abduction investigation.

Law enforcement officials have determined that the elderly woman was forcibly taken against her will, transforming what began as a missing person case into a full-scale kidnapping investigation.

Now, as the search for Nancy has entered its second agonizing week, federal investigators have delivered a crushing blow to the Guthrie family.

Ransom demand emerges

An alleged ransom note demanding $6 million in bitcoin surfaced early in the investigation, sent to both TMZ and local television stations.

The note contained two deadlines for payment, the first passing last Thursday, and a second set for Monday at 5 p.m. Arizona time, with an ominous ‘or else’ threat attached.

The appearance of the ransom demand shifted the investigation’s focus, with the Pima County Sheriff’s Office confirming they had received a copy and were working with the FBI to authenticate it.

The note specified a publicly viewable Bitcoin account where the payment was to be deposited, allowing media outlets and the public to monitor whether any transaction would take place.

Savannah Guthrie’s heartbreaking pledge

Over the weekend, Guthrie and her siblings issued an emotional statement saying they were willing to pay the ransom but needed proof their mother was still alive.

“We are ready to talk,” the Today host said in a heartbreaking Instagram video. “But we need to know without a doubt that she is alive and you have her… Please, reach out to us.”

In subsequent messages, the family made clear their willingness to meet the $6 million demand in exchange for Nancy’s safe return.

“Everyone is looking for you, mommy. Everywhere. We will not rest. Your children will not rest until we are together again,” Guthrie pleaded.

Guthrie, who reportedly earns an $8 million annual salary, demonstrated her family’s desperate readiness to do whatever it took to bring their beloved matriarch home safely.

A family despairs

On Monday, Guthrie released what may be her most emotional plea yet, speaking directly to the American people in what a former defense attorney described as a shift in strategy – no longer addressing the captors, but seeking help from the public.

“We are at an hour of desperation, and we need your help,” she said, her voice breaking. “We believe our mom is still out there… If you see anything, if you hear anything, if there is anything at all that seems strange to you, report it to law enforcement.”

President Donald Trump has personally reached out to the Guthrie family and directed all federal law enforcement resources to assist in the search.

“We are deploying all resources to get her mother home safely,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “The prayers of our Nation are with her and her family.”

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department announced Monday it is pursuing ‘new leads’ and expanding its search, with law enforcement presence expected to continue at the Guthrie residences.

However, officials have provided no details about what those leads might entail, citing the need to preserve the integrity of the investigation.

FBI steps in

The investigation took a significant turn Monday when the Pima County Sheriff’s Department announced it was no longer handling inquiries related to the ransom notes, transferring that responsibility entirely to federal authorities.

Sources told Fox News there had been delays in local cooperation with federal investigators, with the sheriff’s office reportedly waiting days before fully looping in the FBI.

“The FBI is handling all aspects related to any ransom note(s) or communications involving the Guthrie family,” the sheriff’s department announced. “Any inquiries regarding this matter should be directed to the FBI Public Affairs Office.”

The bureau confirmed it has deployed additional personnel from field offices across the nation to Tucson and established a 24-hour command post staffed with crisis management experts, analytical support teams, and investigative units.

With the search for Nancy ongoing, the FBI has also released surveillance images and a video of a masked person on the 84-year-old’s porch in the early morning hours of February 1.

The individual has not been publicly identified, nor has it been confirmed whether they are directly responsible for Nancy’s disappearance; however, this development marks the first major breakthrough in the case to date.

The FBI said yesterday that it had not identified any suspects or persons of interest.

Despite what may be a significant development in the case, as the 5 p.m. deadline arrived Monday in Tucson, the worst fears of investigators and the Guthrie family appeared to materialize.

The devastating update

TMZ founder Harvey Levin revealed his organization had been monitoring the Bitcoin account referenced in the ransom note throughout the day, confirming that the account balance remained at zero with no transactions recorded as the deadline passed.

Hours later, the FBI delivered its most disheartening update yet.

“For more than a week, FBI agents, analysts and professional staff have worked around the clock to reunite Nancy Guthrie with her family,” a spokesperson said.

“The FBI is not aware of any continued communication between the Guthrie family and suspected kidnappers, nor have we identified a suspect or person of interest in this case at this time.”

The statement confirmed what many had feared: despite the family’s willingness to pay and their public pleas for contact, no payment had been posted to the Bitcoin account, and communication with the alleged kidnappers appeared to have ceased entirely.

With no proof of life and expired ransom deadlines that were never acted upon, investigators and the Guthrie family now face a chilling possibility: the ransom notes may have been an elaborate hoax, leaving them back at square one in determining what happened to Nancy.

The FBI continues to plead with the public for assistance. “Someone has that one piece of information that can help us bring Nancy home. We need that person to share what they know,” the agency stated.
