What many people don’t realise is that crab sticks are actually a product known as ‘surimi’ – a Japanese invention that dates back hundreds of years.

Surimi is made by washing minced white fish repeatedly until only pure protein remains, before being flavored, colored and shaped to resemble crab meat.

While the modern Western version is far more processed than the original Japanese product, the method is still used worldwide as a low-cost seafood substitute.

Recent revelations have shocked crab stick consumers

For years, crab sticks have been a snacking staple for seafood lovers across the world, and have tantalised taste buds with their distinct flavour, resembling the tasty essence of crab meat.

However, recent revelations have shocked consumers worldwide, as it has come to light that these popular seafood sticks aren’t as they seem.

The realisation of how the fishy treat is actually created has proved to be a stomach-turning point for numerous consumers.

Upon people discovering the video circulating Reddit, many users expressed their disgust and resolved to eliminate these artificially crafted treats from their diets completely.

This is inevitably what led to the disgust amongst seafood lovers upon stumbling across the crabstick video that has ruffled several feathers.

Video reveals the truth about how crab sticks are produced

One user has taken to Reddit to post a clip of a crab stick being made and it goes into lengthy detail.

In the footage, it is shared that the primary ingredient of crab sticks is not, in fact, freshly harvested crab meat but rather a blend of other elements expertly moulded to mimic the appearance and taste of crab.

While the exact method of how those who create crab sticks may slightly differ between various manufacturers, the process usually begins with white fish such as Alaskan pollock being minced into a paste before it is washed multiple times to remove fat, odour and color.

This leaves behind a sticky protein known as surimi.

The mixture is then blended with starch, sugar, egg whites, salt, artificial crab flavoring and coloring agents.

The paste is heated, shaped into sticks and layered with red dye on the outside to mimic the appearance of real crab meat.

For many viewers, seeing the pale fish paste pumped through machines was enough to completely turn their stomachs.

False advertising?

Much of the backlash appears to stem from the belief that crab sticks contain real crab meat.
